Default Advice between 500EFL and 550e

Hello,

I would like to buy a new Hely.

I can't not decide between a 550 and 500. What are in your opinion the pros and cons of ech model?

Then, talking about the 550 what is the latest version, I shall consider?

Thanks for helping, Daniele

What have you been flying up until now? What kind of room do you have were you fly? Have you seen both fly up close? And which one do you think you would be most comfortable with? The new 550dfc is really a 600 in size, just a little smaller blades and a little less power.

Hello,

I have flown with 450 and 500, no problem at all as to the room.

I have not seen both fly up close and this is the reason why I am asking. I am then concerned about the 550 dfc head; is it a good choice or better stick with a standard flybarless head?

Thanks,
Daniele

I agree with Ranchhand. There is a huge difference in size between the 500 and the 550. The 550 is almost as big as my new 600. If you have the room get the 550. Right now my 550 is my favorite heli. It has good presence in the air and flys great, with just the right power for my flying style. If you are a little short on room get the 500. My 500 is also a great flying heli, but after flying the 550 it seems small. Go to a field and watch both fly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of Align's DFC heads. They fly great.

Great to hear. Have you bought the kit with Talon esc? What servos are you using? How do you like them?

Thanks, daniele

I have found this kit:

http://shop.align.com.tw/product_inf...oducts_id=4550

Can you please advise on the quality of the electronics? Can I just use it stock?

Thanks, Daniele

Yes I got the V3 kit, without the 3gx, I had a HC3sx I'm using instead. I didn't like the Talon because it doesn't have the data logging and that has been a big help in the past. I'm using a CC Ice 100 and a Lifepo4 battery, no bec. Stock cyclic, but a MKS tail because the HC3Sx has problems with some tail servos, so I just sold it before it was ever even mounted so I can't say much about it.

This is the one I bought. It has the 600 boom. This is a great heli! T-REX 550E DFC Combo W/O 3GX RH55E02X0 Review(s)Your Price: $724.99 I was first thinking 500 but the 550 is a lot bigger and I can use my 3s lipos that I use in my 450 if I want, and down the road when I buy some 6s I would be able to use those in a 700 if I want to get a bigger bird. Just my 2 cents worth. GOOD LUCK!

How do you use the 3s lipos from the 450? Do you put 4 in at once? In a 2s2p configuration?

To the OP:
I would recommend getting a 550. But I have never flown a 500 - I went from a 450 to a 550. The 550 is really a 6s variant of a 600 size heli whereas the 500 is really a big-brother of a 450.
The one piece of advice that annoyed me but was absolutely correct was to get a decent charger. I stuffed around for ages with a 50W charger. 5000mAh 6s packs took over 3 hours each to charge. I now have a decent 1350W charging setup and can charge 6x 5000mAh 6s packs in around half an hour total It's insane. But I don't miss out on flying time because I don't have uncharged packs any more.

i have flown both, and they are both very nice to fly but... i like the 550 better.

i would say dont get a dfc head or the 3gx... too many problems.

i have my 550 fitted with beastx and also fitted a compass 6hv head. pics in my album if you are interested.

The 500-size flies like a beefed up 450. Compared to the 450 size, the 500 size is more stable, has more presence, auto-rotates better, and does not feel like a toy. However, compared to bigger helicopters, the 500 uses slower micro servos and auto-rotation is best left to more experienced pilots.

The 550 size feels like a scaled down version of a 700, but with the simplicity of operating on 6S. Compared to the 500 size, the 550 uses standard size servos, auto-rotates much easier, and has more room to run wires neatly.

Align offers a good bang for the the buck, and parts are readily available from multiple vendors. However, it seems that the latest kit releases from other companies have been designed from the ground up as strictly electric and FBL, without legacy components and parts that may affect optimal FBL geometry and COG.

Default Advice between 500EFL and 550e

I bought a 500 because I got a good deal on a box of parts I then added to to build mine. Compared to my friends 450 and my old 130x and mcpx the 500 looked massive and although it does fly great (dfc head but since it isn't a 550 I'm sure it's a whole different ball game so I'm not claiming any knowledge about the 550 dfc) I have really been thinking of upgrading to a 550. By no means do I have the money to just go out and buy one so id have to sell my 500 and slowly put a 550 together... In short, I like my 500 a lot, but every time I see a 550 it makes me realize that 550+ is a whole different class of helicopters... And although the 500 is a LOT bigger than a 450, the difference from 500-550 is just as much if not more.

The math is simple but you're talking about flying 2200MaH 6s on a heli that is recommended for 2600 to 5200 mAh. Most people can't get a decent CoG using packs less than 4400 mAh and you're talking about using a pack with half that weight. I'm curious how you get you CoG. Have you flown this setup?
