Okay. I've had a bunch of 2S 5000 mAh 45C and 5600 mAh 60C lipos last for 4 years, mostly without dying, but I took care of them like they were my children. Two died early - one bad cell in each one. One in 9 months, the other 2-1/2 years.

Maybe a bad cell in the one you're talking about? It happens.

Probably. You won't mess up the bearing if you follow the instructions for applying the loctite.

Bearing failure in a motor tends to end the motor's life quite quickly. Here's a picture of what this slipping can do to the shaft over time.

So the whole point of the mod is to make the motor last longer because they have a tendency to fail way too early. In my opinion, though, it's not nearly as easy as some people have made it out to be. I spent hours just working on the stupid c-clip between getting it off and then getting it back on - and I stripped out the upper grub screw by not being careful so I wasn't able to pull the can off completely; I'm guessing it was too well thread locked and needed heat to remove it.

Thanks for the ambiguous answer.

Had a weird / fun crash yesterday

Been working on the iKON setup, plus a short test hover. Which obviosly had drained my pack more than I'd imagined...

So after 2 minutes of it flying great it just cut off... no decrease in power gradually... just R.I.P. mid-air... it stopped abruptly, tipped backwards... and dropped like a rock with the tail first. The plastic tail case went to pieces, and it took a 3 cm dirt sampe inside the tail boom! No other damage to the heli except a stripped Lynx main gear. I think that's the first time the main blades and canopy has survived a crash...

I'm now using MSK DS470 cyclics and MKS DS480 tail servo. Great stuff, they are only 9.5 grams and with metal gears. Direct fit.

Are those servos rated for 6V (and do you run the 6V mod)?

No, just 5V so I can't run the 6V setting (switch).

I guess I could run 6V and use a step-down diode on ALL servos though - is that a good idea? I ordered those 1N4001, and could only find a 25 pcs anyways

Not sure if there is anything wrong with running diodes all all the servos - I am not an EE, so I can only speculate!

I have never checked the voltage at the servos, but I thought a diode only dropped the voltage by about .7 volts, so you still wouldn't be at 5v - it would be a little bit higher. It depends on how tolerant the MKS servos are to a higher voltage, I think.

I am wondering if you suffered a brownout on your crash?

Nono, just my own stupidity! Spent a lot of time setting up the iKON FBL controller. Some test hovering... some more setup. Done! Go out to fly, same pack, 4 min timer... I charged back over 2000 mAH on a 2200 mAh pack LVC for sure! (motor stopped)

The benefit to doing that would be pretty minimal. Generally people run higher servo voltage to get more speed and torque, if you're stepping it back down you eliminate that benefit while adding waste. The upside might be decreased risk of Rx brownout (or VUS), but if that's a concern I would go with an external BEC anyway.

I got my new Canomod lid in the mail today. It looks so cool that I had to put all the black parts back on it.

It's sunny and warm out . . .. gonna go fly - stay tuned!

I just got back from flying. I'm proud to say that I'm now into 36 flights in a row, with zero issues. I only flew two packs, as I got an audience of sorts, which made me want to run home and put the brown pants on.

Speaking of brown pants, I hammered a stall turn way over 90 degrees - about 10 degrees upside down. Thanks to my stick time on the Phoenix Sim, I effortlessly glided thru that maneuver.

I'm loving this model more and more every time I use it!

PS - Damn, I had my smartphone on me, and should have asked my neighbor Al (one of my spectators) to video me. Yay to afterthoughts!

Today I had my first crash on the 450x. I packed it in hard while trying to come out of a descending right bank turn. I realized that I got tight to the side of my flying area and was near some light poles. I lost orientation and went in hard. Heli hit the ground and bounced about 60 feet. I found what was left of the tail case, blades and grips, about 100 more feet away. Amazingly the canopy was mostly unharmed. has a slight crack in one spot, and some dirt scuffs. Oh well, they cant stay pretty forever.

The list, so far:
Battery
Frame
Main gear
Main shaft
Feathering shaft
Main blades
Landing gear
Carbon boom
Tail case
Tail belt
Tail servo rod
Misc lost hardwear

Kind of bummin. I havent decided if it would be more cost effective to buy a 450 3d, another 450x for parts, or to just buy all of the parts individually.

I have trouble with all the mechanical stuff and I did it. Not saying it was not a pain, but follow the video instructions as they are detailed and easy to follow. What is hard is not losing the tiny c clip. It will try to hide inside the can because of the magnets.

Be sure you use a zip lock bag to do all of this. And yes the can is hard to remove, but I finally got it off.

I may be wrong about this but seems like I heard they fixed this issue with the upgraded motor (450)

Fantastic point hoss! I hate losing e-clips/ c-clips!

So, 37 flights in, is it too late to still do it?

Sorry to hear about your personal smackdown. Been there. I am both sympathetica and empathetic to how you might be feeling. Roll up your sleeves for the rebuild....it's half the fun for me.

I was out cutting the grass today and ran over a tail boom I lost from a crash and it was way back against the woods in the back yard a bought 100ft from the crash. Only thing I could think of is one of our dogs found it and drug it down there.
