Smile My newly redone 450

Just finished today my very first "project" on a helicopter, other than the 130X. I had lots of help from HF member Primal. installed Savox servos, Western Robotics BEC and a YEP 45A ESC. It is a busy place in the belly of the beast,

Alright, I'm currently uploading the last flight before my personal drama started. Since then I have installed a new ESC, Scorpion -6 motor, and re-geared a set of stock servosMuch different feeling. Initial test hover involved some flapping noise towards the end (will try and upload that as well) so I landed and it turned out to be my tail fin hitting my main blades. I'm surprised it ended as well as it did. A closer look revealed the bottom screw slipped out due to the plastic hole it screws into breaking off. Not sure how that happened. Anyway. I have it benched until the new tail case comes in. Crappy weather around here anyway. Thinking of ordering an aftermarket motor mount for the Scorpion. Also, has anyone had any luck with aftermarket tail cases/assemblies, if they are available?

Can you turn a 450X belt drive into a torque tube? Has anyone tried? Is it possible? What are the pros/cons of one vs. the other?

TT is more locked in but belt is more forgiving if you land in tall grass or tail blades touch anything.

From what I rave read and heard, you should not be able to tell the difference between a properly set up TT set up and a properly set up belt system.

It's totally a preference thing. You have to a tension a belt, and you have to lube a TT setup. Pick your poison.

Episode Episode 114 of RCHN podcast covers this directly.

I managed to strip a TT gear on the X5 due to a stupid mistake where I let the tail blades strike the ground pretty hard. I lost the tail blades and stripped a few teeth on the front TT drive gear. The one thing I liked about it was that I was able to swap out that gear and the blades and had the thing back in the air in 5 minutes. I didn't even have to remove the boom. So it's a concern, but with the right design it doesn't have to be a huge headache to repair.

The conversion went real smooth. The only thing that I didn`t bargin on was having to turn in on all the swash link rods..somewhere around 4 each.Yeah..I used the Blade drop in assembly.I did get to test hover it.First lift was straight up and out in 10 mph wind @ 45 dgr.Not the best hover on my part but a good build.[ame]http://youtu.be/pdrrAyn0JTk[/ame]
