Default Metal/Aluminum Cased V-Bar Control

So I'm in the early stages of planning my TX upgrade. I have a 2007 Spektrum DX7 and run (2) full size V-Bars on 5.3

I also have several Blade Bind-n-Fly models but assume I won't be able to use a VBC with them.

That said, I'm VERY interested in the new V-Bar Control and am wondering when the metal (aluminum?) cased TX will be out?

If there's still debate on what material to use, I'd suggest at least partial aluminum for the most vulnerable areas (back/corners). That said, the whole case in aluminum would be great if it doesn't make it too heavy.

I see there is a champagne version on the Mikado USA website now. It states it has a "metal" coating. That's great but I'm hoping it will still be somewhat lightweight and that there will be a silver or light grey color available too. Dark colors on electronics out in bright sun/hot days will get VERY hot.

Additionally, is that silver rear metal handle removable? I use a transmitter tray and it looks like the handle sticks out the back too far and it will need to be shortened to work with transmitter trays.

For the record, I'm also looking at the JR XG14 as a replacement. That said, I only fly V-bar helis and all the features and integration of the VBC with V-Bar really warrant taking a much closer look (and feel) of the V-Bar control.

Yes the rear handle is removable.

You really have to hold one to appreciate the controller. I was sold as soon as I picked one up at an event that mikado was at.

I realize that one of the reps posted it would be metal....

But this is what ulrich said on the vstabi forum about both.

The Base Material is plastic, the surface gets a coat of real metal which is protected by an additional clearcoat layer.

Yes, it is metal coated, not solid. Net result is lower cost and lighter than solid metal, but with the same visual and firmness benefits. My understanding is that almost all "metal" radios are actually coated.

Personally I think plastic is far superior functionally. But for looks, that champagne metal one is just...

So does anyone have the new metal (champagne color) V-Bar control yet? I'd like to see some better pictures (and larger) than what is on the Mikado USA website.

I'd also like to know...

The weight of the radio, so I can compare it to the plastic version.

If the sticks have any flex to them when hitting the end of the gimbals? I have heard the original black TX sticks had some flex.

Isn't it just a plastic case with metallic paint? So it should weigh the same .

No, it is not painted.

It is real metal!

So the antenna has to be moved outside the case.

The champagne one also has couple extra features I saw. One had to do with rubber grips or something on switches. Think the sticks were different to.

Been using my original vbar control since they were released so I thought it was time to treat myself to the new champaign version.

Should be here today if UPS pull their fingers out, can't wait!

That's awesome!

Would you mind posting several pictures of it from different angles as it's hard for me to see it from the few pics on the web.

Also, let us know if the sticks feel firmer (less flex) or if they feel the same and any other differences from your original vbar control.

Ok so I had a few flights today with the new radio....

Not sure if they have made any changes to the roary control but it is much smoother than my old one, when the radio is turned off it's a lot quiteter and not so notchy, in use it's better when selecting menus, my old one didn't always move through the menus properly sometimes it would skip a few levels or not move at all but the new one is flawless.

Gimbals are very smooth, the collective is better, my old one was a bit sticky where this one is super smooth. I can't really comment on the stick flexing issue as I never had it before, I'm not a stick banger so that's probably the reason.

I have seen it mentioned that some want to remove the handle so they can place the radio on a transmitter tray, this won't be possible with the champaign version as there is now an antenna in the handle, they did this as the metal case would cause problems with the internal one.

One thought I had is how durable the metal coating will be with prolonged use, the coating does look a bit thin so constant use may wear the coating off over time, it does have a protective layer over the metal so hopefully it will be fine.

Have to say I love this radio, it looks so much better that the old one, it just looks better quality.

I hope to get some pictures and post them up by the weekend.

Thanks for the initial report John.

I'm anxiously awaiting the pictures.

If it's not too much to ask, would you mind taking several angles/views of the front of the TX both indoors and outdoors in bright light?

This will be a major purchase for me and there are very few pics of it due to being so new. I'm also trying to decide if the bright silver color coming out might be too bright and might cause unwanted reflections into your eyes when flying on sunny days.

Thanks!

Attached some pics of the radio, they didn't come out as well as I hoped plus the indoor ones made the radio look very dark so I didn't use them.

If you need anymore then let me know.

It's the champagne one which some call the metal one, it's a plastic case with a metal coating plus it has a protective layer over the top of the metal.

I like the knobbies. I want them to send me some for my early-adapter VBC.
