Well I flew two packs on the Atom 5.5 today... Flew better than ever and no more ground resonance on landings.

All I did was tighten the main blade bolts and also tried to be more careful in landings. I suspect the combination of main blades on the loose side on the grips plus a bouncy landing did indeed induce the ground resonance last week.

This heli is such a joy to fly, especially when it is not too windy. This is probably because of its high power to weight ratio. I can do rainbows and tic tocs forever on this heli.

Thank yo Ah Clem! I think you found my thread in the main forums. Slowly but surely...

The Atom is such a wonderful helicopter to fly. Its simplicity is something really special, kind of like the Protos 500. Its simple, easy, cheap, and flies great. Im just worried about its future at this point.

I mean, look at the Compass forums for the past two months. I don't know what happened.

Yeah the traffic here has definitely slowed down. It appears many of the original reps and pilots have moved on. However this situation is not unique to the Compass forums... If you check the other forums even for the more popular helis, the number of posts have gone down too.

People just don't seem as excited for or loyal to compass as compared to 6 months ago

Still love my 500s! New OMG tail servo to replace the old Futaba on my 430mm. Taylor crashed my stretch after a mechanical failure and I'm trying to get it ready for the Cincy fun fly.

I finally got to fly my Atom today. Put four packs through it with all safe landings, can't beat that! Due to my previous work schedule I had not been able to get to the "big heli" field for about 8 months so I was limited to my 450. Felt great to fly a bigger heli, although I am really looking forward to putting some Rail blades on it.

My 5.5 is airworthy, but I ordered a few replacement parts to sort a *bad* slop in the tail rotor. Despite it has a fairly new BL Futaba rudder servo, the tail performance is lacking and no gain/tail adjustment seems to make it better.

In fact, I think I will fully disassemble the Atom for cleansing and maintenance when the parts arrive. I lost count of the hours flown after the last overhaul.

3 years ago i had an atom, but crashed it really hard into te ground, so didn't rebuild it.

but now 3 years later i was thinking... the Exo 500 seems to be far, far away for a release ..

but should i buy an atom again.
It was always a strong and good flying machine ..

but how about the parts for it in europe, here in the Netherlands are no shops anymore that sell compass.

Well, I attempted to stuff some BK 5001HV servos into the Atom and it didn't go so well. I had to mod the frames a bit to get them in there and the only way to really do it is to pull the frames apart. It's actually not a hard or long task to complete. However, getting that deep into it and realizing that there's just no fixing the geometry which left me understandably crestfallen. To add insult to injury, I can't seem to resell the servos for 1/2 what they're worth so I may end up holding onto them for some unknown future project.

I think I may go down the road of really modding the frames to fit the servos a little better, come summertime, and I still don't have it flying. I broke the original JR servo case trying to get them out and they appear to be discontinued. So I might not have a shot at replacing it which leaves the Atom completely grounded for a while.

I rebuilt the tail linkage section that was sloppy as hell. I also took the time to replace the wire "antenna" of the right DSMX sat that was broken.

Test flight this weekend.

Cheers!

I am wanting to stretch my Atom... are the parts available? In fact all I need is the boom, pushrod and belt.

Edit- yep, I can get all three from Prostar... like I need to spend anymore money on helis this month

Put in 14flights in the one session on Sunday with mine. Took the same heli on my trip to the US in 2014 and the thing just keeps going, no questions asked!

I fly the stretch more than the 500... Yes a boom, belt and tailrod are all you need.
