power supplies

Time for me to think about building a new charging setup. My 2 old Dell serial PS's don't cut it any more.
What is the best power supply for the $ out there nowadays? is it still the HP DSP-1200 for its size and close to 1000W output, or there's something better/newer/smaller?
I'll need 24-36v so I'm thinking about floating and serializing 2-3 of whatever it is.

I think they are awesome. Super low profile. High watts. Decent price. I have not seen anything else pop up that would seem better.

I was thinking about grabbing some of these myself. I'm stringing 750's together in series myself. Still don't know if I need 1200 though. It's strange I have the 750's putting out 25v at 60amps which doesn't make sense to me I would think two 750's in series are 750 watts not 1500 watts. But I guess it may be 1500 or I'm way overdriving my psu's

think of it this way: one gives 12.5V * 60A = 750W, two in series give (2*12.5V) * 60A = 1500W. if you put them in parallell instead, you'd get 12.5V * (2*60A) = 1500W.

Ok so it does add the wattage together. So really 1200's are overkill since a 15amp 110 outlet can only support around 1600 watts anyway without tripping the circuit.

I guess it depends though I think my one generator has a 30 amp 120v twist lock so that should be cool hmm time for an upgrade.

It sounds like those 1200's are the way to go. I'm not sure I'll use the full 2000W+ output, but the small size and quiet running will be awesome, I can build a much smaller case now.


BTW I'm still running the Hyperion 720 super duo v3 that I think is the absolute underdog of chargers, with the latest firmware it does everything and more on 2 channels than the new chargers do (ok no bumping) and it has a great PC software for programming, control, charge graphing and battery tracking so what else can I wish for?

Keep in mind as you're doing your calculations that the DC output wattage does not equal the AC input wattage. There are significant power losses in the conversion and regulation, depending on the power supply most do something around 85% efficiency. So achieving 1500W output would actually require more like 1800W input.

On a single 15A circuit (110VAC) you're looking at roughly 1650W, or about 1400W DC output (if there's nothing else on the circuit.) However, that doesn't mean two DSP-1200s is overkill. It's easier on the supplies if you're not running them at max rated capability; they'll generate less heat and last longer. IOW, some margin is desirable when determining how to power a high output charger.

Max rating, yes. Also used supplies are by definition, not new. They may not be able to keep up with their spec rating, so I wouldn't push them anywhere near 900W if you want them to survive long.

Regardless of the DPS 1200 wattage, the size is so convenient. They are flat and short. Leaves a lot of room in the charging case for other options.

I prefer the Meanwell, even smaller. But there's definitely a price difference!

I would love a meanwell but I can't stomach the price. But..........if I had bought a decent size meanwell 5 years ago it probably would have paidfor itself. I bet I have gone through at least $250 in ebay used psu's.

Yeah that's why I use the delta 750's and their super cheap. and no capacitor needed you jump the contacts and get variable fan speed based on temp too unlike Dells I've done which are a single speed.

Can you measure the size of these? I can't find the measures anywhere on the web. Amazon says that these weight 5lbs that's probably total bogus though. If you know their weight please let me know. Thanks!
