Yup. Ardupilot doesn't have auto-auto-rotation code yet. So it attempted to maintain altitude with full collective. That didn't work out very well. Eventually the rotor probably stopped, and actually reversed. It did remain upright hover, as it fell from 600 feet altitude. Surprisingly, there's not that much damage. Even the blades are still intact. Seems just the landing gear bent and I think the boom tube bent.

Thats not bad really, guess the main rotor played parachute.

Yeah, it's really surprising. Almost defies logic.

Well, I got this one flying Auto. Kinda slow and boring at this point, but it's just the second auto flight. Will start increasing speed. One thing I don't like is I can't get the tail to hold really solid. I've fought with the gains for a while, but it moves around a lot. I'm starting to think it's actually due to the gas engine mis-firing so the torque comes on/off and the gyro just can't compensate fast enough?

Something I noticed with both the Vbar and 3DIGI on electrics is that with gear ratios greater than around 10:1 and using a governor the tail will twitch and drift and generally not be locked in place in a hover. I've seen this same effect on different helis with different ESC/motor combinations.

Does this use the same tail section as the X7? If so, you can consider the 3-blade tail upgrade. This should give more tail authority at low head speed.

Yeah, I believe it does, and that's not a bad idea. I should check what the final gear ratio is on the tail. Because the the main is only turning 1100 rpm.
