Default Second reduction gear failure

Has anyone had their reduction gear fail (the gear shaft that holds gear driven by the motor belt). Mine sheared off at the top and caused the belt to fail

I think ... I would just install new ones... Your in there and its easy at this point to replace them.

I do remember seeing an Hardened shaft for the 5.5 some where..... I thought it was Hawk RC... But don't see it on there site....

Maybe someone else can remember the part and if its the same part you broke ......

I found that on the 5.5 the front drive shaft is made from aluminium, and will bend in a crash, whereas the 7.2 one is made from steel and is very hard to bend..luckily the 7.2 drive shaft fit perfectly in the 5.5..I was getting high/low spots on my crown gear mesh, it turns out the front drive shaft was bent...worth checking if you're having problems.
Is this the same shaft ??? thinking this was about the TT shaft .....

I'll keep looking around

May not apply to the 5.5 but on the used Chase 360 I got the pulley/pinion kept sliding up the motor shaft causing it to bind on the motor mount. Would somehow shatter the reduction gear everytime it happened.

(Edit) After reading again sounds like you broke the shaft not the gear...oops lol

I think the 5.5 is this one?
http://www.kdsmodelsusa.com/www-kdsm.../ka-55-027.htm

And the 7.2 is this one:
http://www.kdsmodelsusa.com/www-kdsm.../ka-72-027.htm

Kind of looks like there a bigger gear and different tooth count than the 7.2 - but that might just be the picture. Sure are expensive. I don't remember the parts costing that much.

Very odd wear on the plastic gear. It's as if something is angled a bit on the motor or the upper and lower blocks aren't aligned correctly. There used to be a problem with folks not getting the belt alignment correct. In fact, I would also get a new belt - doesn't hurt.

When the upper shaft failed in flight I'm sure the alignment was off
The belt came a part an only a quarter of it remained

Sure you did't have the belt too tight? Looks like the bearing went out and shaft was leaning towards the motor which caused the ware pattern on the belt gear.

Well that's possible. I changed the motor a couple of weeks before the failure (moved up to a 12s setup). I could have made the belt to tight

I don't believe the 7.2 part will fit. The 5.5 has a seventeen tooth gear and the 7.2 has a twenty tooth gear. If it would fit it will reduce the gear ratio for a higher headspeed.
