Default Collective management and TX adjustments

Hi all. I was recently reading a post about the advantages of certain radios, and it occurred to me I might be able to make some changes that would help me improve my collective management. It is definitely one of my weak areas. Besides more practice, what can I do to my radio to make things better? I have a DX6 that is about three years old. I have never regreased or adjusted the gimbals. How do I do that? Also, any recommendations for dual rates or other adjustments in the software?

You have a few options.

1) It helps to have a really smooth collective stick. Like you mentioned, greasing the half-moon gimbal mechanism may help. Other folks are proponents of lightly sanding the half-moon itself. I prefer to just cut a small strip of Teflon tape (or other easy glide tape) and adhere it to the half-moon.

2) Another option is to limit the collective range to +/- 10 or 11. This would give the collective stick more resolution and allow you to make finer collective adjustments.

3) Dual Rate & EXPO. Assuming you are using a diagonal pitch curve i.e -10, 0, +10, EXPO would not change the collective pitch curve. Unlike when you use EXPO elevator/aileron/rudder channels where the EXPO affects the resolution around center (makes a diagonal curve sigmoidal) EXPO on the pitch curve only smooths out the points along the pitch curve when using a pitch curve other than straight diagonal. A lower Dual Rate would not help either as all it would do is create a "deadband" at high and low collective stick and the resolution would not change at all. Better to make collective pitch adjustments on either the pitch curves or the overall collective travel, not with pitch EXPO.
