Default RPM drop

While flying reasonably hard the rpm's dropped twice within a single flight. Not long enough to force an auto, but long enough to cause concern. I'm flying the original ESC.

The two possibilities that I see are one, it was too hot or high a current on the ESC and it tried to warn or cool down or two, the throttle cable came loose due to vibration from tail blades that have worn out due to trench rash.

The Forza shook too violently in ID2 for me to fly in that mode and started shaking a fair bit after the second dropout in ID1 which was a second indicator to curtail the flight at that point.

I'm now in the midst of changing the tail blades and wondering if I should change the ESC? I have a CC Lite 50A ready to solder up and go.

I ran the stock ESC for a short while but had problems til I swapped it out for a HobbyWing. The CC Lite 50 is an easier fit, has 3 governor speeds and has data logging; better all round.

The OEM ESC was the only weakness of this heli but not hard to overcome.
If you are running the 325mm mains, the standard black blades are fine. I am running 360 mains and use the EX blades, they work well.

My Forza 450 is still my favorite bird to fly...Mr JR, please, please, please make parts available again. Sure it's not the latest heli around but it is still the top class build and I'd hate to bin it for lack of a main gear after a minor mishap.

Good luck.

Thanks! I'm running 325's and have only used the OEM blades. Are you running 3S or 6S on the 360's? If I could avoid a lipo switch and run 360's that would be great. I tried the EX blades once and found at lower ungoverned rpm's it would drop out of the ski when inverted and I was paranoid to raise the rpm too high in fear of frying the ESC.

Yep, after two power drop-outs with the the OEM ESC (luckily no crashes), I decided to not take any further risks and replaced it The CC Lite 50 is not a cheap unit but a good one.

I replaced mine with the HobbyWing because it is much cheaper than the CC and can use the brilliant governor in the iKON flight controller. It is about 0.5mm too wide for the frame but with a bit of care and time (and a belt sander) all fit's well.

Sounds exactly like what happened to me. Are you on 6S or 3S?

Sorry, forgot that.

3S only, and still a pocket rocket. I had heard that the 360 blades make it fly like a larger heli and I must admit it is much smoother, stable and faster than my 325 bladed 450x.

I would be interested to know how feral the 6S gets but I am swimming in 3S 2200mah batteries so that is what I have stuck with.

Cheers.

Thanks again! Most useful info. I'll stick with 3S as I've got 8 3S lipo's I bring to the field each time. After replacing the tail blades all seemed ok till I upped the rpm's. Started wobbling again. Landed and found the culprit, loose bolt on main grip! Tightened and good to go back up to ID2. After a few flights the power glitch struck again. Landed and called it a day. Next to swap out the ESC. Amazing rainbows on ID2. Looking forward to pocket rocket on 360's

Same here
2 power drop outs with original Esc
Worked fine on the bench afterwards
But never put it back on
I found the CC 50 amp lite , got hot under the nose
Moved to the side directly under the shaft
It died after a big hit in a crash
Went with HW got a 60 amp under the nose it does fit
All 3 Forza 450 have Hw , no issues at all
Even with a couple of smacks
Runs very cool also

Thanks Clark! Wish I'd known about the 50 Lite getting hot earlier or maybe I didn't pay attention Didn't realize that's why you had it on the side. I thought it couldn't fit. Any tips for setting up the CC? It's my first.

Hi Clark,

All good. I managed to fit it under the front by carving out some circles in the bottom of the canopy. After my maiden with the new CC ESC all was going well until the rpm's dropped again. Unfortunately near a cone which I didn't manage to outmaneuver

Fast forward a month as I've not been well. I did some repairs and calibrated the throttle end points and turned insentive on. Haven't done bailout yet but no plans to auto my Forza at this point.

Took the Forza to the field, 6 lipos later, all good! Some piros, loops, inverted piros, inverted circuits, almost comfortable
Only one save needed when thumbs went dumb on a backward circuit, two half flips later and recovered just like on the SIM

Just a quick update. All is pretty good good now re vibrations. Tail pretty solid and pretty much no vibes at all rpm's. Rpm no longer cutting out on 325 with CC50 Lite. I've set the ESC to insensitive I think it is. However, on 360's, IU2 I'm getting an alarm, one long, one short beep, and on one occasion I got reduced rpm's. Given it was a power loop on 360's on IU2 I'm not surprised

Further update on the RPM - recently got it clocked for the first time. Spool up is 2,800, Normal is 3,000, ID1 3,400 and ID2 3,900. No wonder I was getting shakes on ID2 and going over current, and on 360 blades! Seems this ESC knows better than me what rpm I should be running
