Any word on the progress of the GPS unit?

There was an update in Spirit's own forum a couple of days ago. Apparently the prototype is manufactured and in testing.

Default GPS on uSpirit

A month or two ago I had a dull-witted incident with an Oxy2 with uSpirit onboard where it got caught by really high winds over a dense wooden area on which the heli suddenly became a dot like within few seconds after doing rescue or two for it to avoid the trees (really tried looking for the tail and orientation). In my fear of it going over that field of trees and into a residential area I just held TH being cocksure it would be relatively easy to find it than cause damage to other's property or injury once I totally loose control. Well, after about an hour and couple of tick bites on me and my buddy, finally found it among dense bushes.

I guess, my question is there any news if the reported gps module will support the uSpirit?

The GPS unit is quite big, the prototype is stated as being 50mm x 40mm x 3mm thick. No issue for larger helis but on size alone it would be tricky to accommodate on micros.

That sounds quite a bit larger than the Skookum GPS. Wonder why it is so big. I was able to but the Skkokum GPS1 in my 450 without any issues.
Maybe able to do the same with the Spirit GPS, guess I will just have to get one and see.

SK-GPS unit is 58mm x 32mm x 13mm.
SK-GPS2 is 50mm x 50mm x 15mm.

By simple calculation you can find that our unit is 4 times, respectively 6 times smaller. Our module can fit basically anywhere as it is very thin including models such as Oxy 2 - tested.
srms, wctest and HELI_FUN like this.

Nice! Coming from the big man himself.

I'll be on the waiting list then.

milo12: You can order Spirit Pro immediately. GPS Modules will be sold separately.

Available pre-orders will be very probably in December.

Thanks.

Will the GPS support any return home function with hovering. Don’t need a auto land function.

Can't wait to jump on this list. Be sure to post a link here if you can for the pre-orders.

Since it’s December now I wanted to check in on the progress. Any updates on when GPS will be available?

He wants to sell them and make money way more than any of us wants new toy. When they are available it will be advertised.

I've been watching and participating in the GPS thread on the Spirit forum. The original release date would have had it available my middle of 2017. Subsequently there was the suggestion of pre-orders 'before Christmas'.
Clearly the original date didn't happen and I dont think we will see pre-orders this month either. The more recent statements are along the lines of 'it will be ready when it's ready' which tells me that development is taking longer than anticipated and a firm date is still not set.

It probably would have been better and avoided some frustration if the existence of a GPS unit was kept secret until it was ready to go.

Personally I’m happy to wait. The least I’d like is it to be unreliable or half baked. Plus flying season is pretty much done for the next couple of months so it wouldn’t get much use anyway 😋

Nah, there's no too cold a weather for a new feature like this. Like what Tomas said above "probably" December it "could" be December for pre-orders. If that would be the case, i'm one of those people (and a couple of team pilots that i personally know) who'd be at the front of the line to get the first batch of modules.

Well, we are all happy to wait isn't; not easily frustrated?
