Default Low-Headspeed Setup

Question for all you Protos experts:

I am looking at buying a 380 Evo to build over the winter. My plan is to strap some training gear on the skids and use it to teach my 8- and 10-year-old kids to fly. I'd like to make it a 3S setup so batteries are cheap, and I want to keep the headspeed down so it's managable for beginners.

Given that, what headspeed should I be shooting for?
I can get a combo from MSH with an 890-kV motor, is that the best choice?

Thanks in advance!

The 890kv motor is designed for 6s setup. You may be able to pinion it up to work with 3s. My max governed headspeed on 6s with stock pinion is 3000 so probably half that on 3s.

Hey thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I did some maths last night and I see that 3S is probably not enough with that motor.

So really it comes down to how low of a headspeed can the 380 run and still fly? I'm looking for the sweet spot where the response isn't twitchy but it's still stable in the air.

I use the pulse 6s 1800 batteries 45 or 65c. They are more expensive than 3s but if you catch them on sale I think they are around 45.00 or so. If you lower the headspeed with stock pinion many are getting 7 plus minutes of flight. I get 5min at 3000 rpm with aggressive sport flying and poor collective management.

Using stock motor, pinion, and 6s will not give a great experience at low head speeds. The low pwm will heat up the ESC and motors are less efficient at partial throttle. You might consider 4s or 5s setup and run those numbers while keeping the throttle near 85-90 percent (you probably won't need much ESC overhead when training involves only hovering).

You'll need battery weight near the 6s 1800 weight for balance, so you would get more amp hours out of a 4s or 5s setup to help with flight times.

I set my 380 up as a lighter weight setup from the start and selected my motor KV for 4s packs. I use 4s 2200mah and 4s 2650mah packs with the smaller Scorpion HK2520-1350kv. With this setup it is very capable on my low headspeed down at 2000rpm and I can do low headspeed 3d and would make a good hovering trainer with long flight times and plenty of stability.

Thanks for the inputs guys.

According to my calcs, I can run the 890 motor on 4S with a 22T pinion to get around 2K RPM at 90% throttle.

Is there a compelling reason to go with a higher kV motor and smaller pinion?

Also how big of an ESC do I realistically need?

Forgive me for all the questions, want to make sure I get this right the first time.

That should of work fine and you can just swap to 6s and put the right pinion on when you want to up the headspeed later on.

For the higher headspeed a 50A on 6s is fine and would be overkill for your 4s 2000rpm setup. You could probably go down to a 25A but that might be pushing it a little and wonít give you the flexibility to run higher headspeed later. Also for balance you probably donít want to go smaller than a 50A. The HW V3 50A or v4 60A are a good options.

Officially joining the Protos Owners Club. Place my order for a Yellow 380 Evo this morning.

I will be sure to post a photo of the kids reaction Christmas morning.

Now to watch Black Friday sales for servos, ESC, and blades...

Awesome and welcome. The P380 is probably my favorite heli to date.

What are you guys running for tail blades? The manual suggests 67 mm, but as far as I can tell those don't exist.
How big can I go and not risk scraping them on takeoff? Will 70s work?

I just use the ones that come with the kit. They also have a speed up gear for ultra low headspeed setups. Here is the replacement ones from the msh site. You can get them in other colors also.

I use the speedup pulley and standard blades.

Use the stock Blades it came with. No advantage I could find trying many other blades. I also tried a few different tail blades with the speed up gear. I didnít find it necessary and settled with the stock gearing. I run down to 2400 with a much lower gain than my higher head speeds and it holds super well.

Oh, I just assumed since it doesn't come with main blades that I had to get tail blades as well. Works for me!
