XK 110 info & spares
So a fellow flier is looking to get an XK 110.
It seems there are several different versions. I also notice that some have batteries that have their plug mounted right at that pack instead of having wires. So, my questions are... What exact version of the 110 should he get if he wants the battery with wires? Also, is it possible to get a brushless motor for the tail? In addition, what spare parts should he order? Thanks for any input.

Have never seen a version with different connector - you'll need to post a link to that. I've bought three in the last year and they all had a wired micro-Losi connector. If he wants to be sure, he can order it from MotionRC, the US distributor, and call them first to confirm.
Have not seen a BL for the tail. Spares depend on whether flying in the house or outdoors. On grass/dirt, you won't break much. You do need extra main gears as they eventually wear out or lose teeth after too many crashes. The feathering shaft, when slightly bent, will cause the heli to develop an annoying rudder drift. If slamming it around hard enough, you will eventually need to replace the boom. You can either go with a solid boom and wrap the wires outside, or stick with the stock boom and figure that this is about the time you would need to be replacing the tail motor anyway. It's a great little heli.

Thanks Wargamer.
We fly indoors (decent sized gym) for the winter. He does crash a bit so I'm assuming he will need spare shafts and gears. I don't remember where I saw that batt pack but I'm almost positive it was an XK 120. If it uses a Losi connector, then it should be easy to get plugs to make charge cables so better chargers can be used. Motion RC is actually pretty close to us so he could probably just drive there. I'll pass on the info and have him order one. If I like it, I might have to get one myself. Thanks for the input!

It's also recommended to change the lipo connectors to either JST or micro- Deans. If you're quick enough to touch the Losi connection after a flight you'd notice that it's evidently warm signifying it's a bit under rated. Eventually the esc side Losi will deteriorate because of this.
So it's best to upgrade them before investing on charging cables. |

I suspect it depends on how hard you fly it.

Thanks.
If it was me (and I am tempted to buy one too), I'd probably swap them to JST. If I bought one though, I'd have to buy a decent Futaba TX that will do S-FHSS protocol. That's why I haven't tried one yet.

Or just buy the RTF. The included X6 radio is very decent and capable.

If so, we could buy 1 RTF kit and then a BNF heli to switch off with. That's what I currently do with my DX7.

Yes, as I recall it has a 10 model memory, and you can actually bind several helis to the same model if you want. (Not a good practice with bigger helis, but convenient when you've got several micros that use the same set-up.)

+1 That's what i did before converting all my helis to OpenTx. Two K110 on one X6. Can even use it for plankers and quads. It's a cheapo but full featured s-fhss based controller. Here's the manual: X6 Controller

Cool, thanks guys!
In that case, I think I'm going to order a couple for myself too.

Great! The k110 is an awesome heli to have around when someone wants to try flying, and a lot of fun for stress-free flying in small spaces. I will say that the Oxy 2 is starting to take the spot of go-to micro as my skills improve.

So I just ordered an XK110.
I think I ordered all the spares I'd need except one. Main blades. Tell me if I'm wrong but all micro blades I've had have lasted a very long time so I didn't think I'd need any. They get scuffed, scratched and slightly chipped but I've rarely had to replace one due to major damage. If I'm wrong on the XK110, I'll just have to place a second order at some point. I had to order the heli and radio separately as the RTF kit was out of stock.

So my first XK110 purchase is on indefinite hold.
When I didn't see the heli shipped after a week, I inquired at Banggood. They said I cancelled the order... What??? No, I didn't cancel anything. He insisted I did, and tried to show me a screen showing that's what I did. He said I could re-order it (but now it's $10.00 more and the TX is OOS) Well, I thought about it but I don't trust that company now. I still have some spare parts coming supposedly, but no heli, TX etc. Not happy. My local vendor said more stock will arrive in 6-8 weeks. Oh well. I Guess maybe I'll revisit this heli at another time.

3D Dave: try tomtop.com
I know it looks less legit than banggood, but they have come through for me on two orders, no issues. That’s really weird though. I’ve ordered some parts from bg and besides some skids being bent, which they refunded, they’ve been fine. |

TomTop? Gearbest? Beware!
I would strongly recommend NOT ordering from TomTop - my first and only experience with them went badly (and I was not alone).
This past August, I (and several others over on the - RCG K110 thread), ordered through TomTop (they were offering a very low price on the K110 BNF- $53). Their ad showed them in-stock in a US warehouse available for immediate *free* shipping. Four days after placing my order, I received the following email from them: Quote:
I know that others have had success ordering from TomTop, but after this bad first experience, I'll never order from them again. I've also heard that GearBest is also not reliable (lots of horror stories with them, too). Banggood is also kinda flakey, (and their packaging is terrible - they do not use boxes and put nearly everything in envelopes), but they actually do try to make things right when an order goes wrongly (I have had several dozen successful orders from them). e.g. One of the XK helis I ordered was a RTF but the X6 Tx was defective (there was a broken trace leading from one of the switches to the CPU inputs). I sent them a picture of the defect and they immediately sent me a new X6 transmitter at no cost to me (and I did not have to return the defective one). Motion RC to the rescue! For buyers located in the US such as myself, the go-to source is now: Motion RC - they are a US distributer (but their first shipment sold out very quickly). I've placed 4 orders with them so far and their customer service is top-notch. (Motion RC is fast becoming my favorite on-line hobby store.) |
