Default Benefits of Steam vs. PC

This may have been answered already, but I'm seriously considering purchase and aside from the community aspect, what else does Steam offer the user? I am not a gamer.

Thanks folks!

Good choice to buy the sim

You are not paying anything for Steam itself. It is just the platform to distribute the software. AccuRC is only available through this these days, there is no other source. But you can buy the access code directly through the accurc.com website.

One benefits of steam compared to the old download is, that the downloads for updates are much smaller (in the past it was always the full program).

So would I be able to download the latest AccuRC and play it on my PC without the hassle of staying connected via internet?

Again, I have no interest in gaming other than the sim.

One downside to purchasing a download-only version compared to a physical DVD is that you would not be able to sell the download-only version software in the future. This of course does not apply to AccuRC since the only option is to purchase a download-only version, but it is something to consider for other simulators that offer both a download version and a physical DVD version.

However if you arent a gamer and just have the Steam account for AccuRC there is nothing to stop you selling the Steam account.

Also AccuRC is A LOT cheaper than the others so what you lose in second hand value of another sim is more than what AccuRC cost!

Steam also likes to sit tn the background and occasionally update etc. If that bothers you you can shut it down until the next time you want to sim.

It is my understanding that the AccuRC purchase price to the consumer is the same whether one purchases it from Steam or directly from the AccuRC website. However, it is also my understanding that the AccuRC developer makes more money if AccuRC is purchased via the AccuRC website. Assuming this is the case, one might as well purchase the AccuRC download from the AccuRC website (helps the developer) rather than purchasing it from Steam.

I have logged into Steam and still not sure it will work for me. Ordering direct from AccuRC apeals to me more, and the fact that the developer gets a larger share is additionally a good thing.

I was curious if ordering direct would provide a disk in the box, or does it only provide the activation code?

They will email you a code to input into Steam.

For me, I choose to not have Steam open upon start up so it's not running in the background when not in use. I just click on Steam prior to starting up the SIM. If there is an update, it's usually done in a minute or two. I also believe that if Steam is not open when you open AccuRC, it will open Steam automatically. It's intuitive.

Certainly appreciate the information. AccuRc looks to be a useful and fun product.

I am just enough "old school," that the need to use a gaming site (even though legitimate) for use and updates causes me to shy away for now.

The Steam Client is incredibly well thought out, its small and uses almost no processor or ram. Right now its using 0.2% cpu and 48Mb of ram on my PC. The benefits far outweigh any old school feelings :-)

48Mb seems a bit much for my 8088, so I tend to unload the Steam client if I'm not simming
Although I think the Apple IIe was probably my first machine.

Question

OK, I get it

I noticed that Amazon shows the following: AccuRc v2.0 W/ USB Dongle
Free upgrade to 2.0 included!
Has v1.5 disc with 2.0 upgrade

What, if any would be the pitfalls of going this route?

Thanks!

I believe the window for converting the older version to the new Steam version has closed. You'd end up with the older version with no further updates and still have to pay for the Steam version if you wanted it.

If you really wanted to save a bit, AccuRC offer 25% discounts occasionally but you never know when. The last was about a month ago.

As far as I can tell this is V1 so you would need to purchase the update to v2.

I'm in, just going to watch for a discount. Thanks for the wisdom.

Thanks for your direction, looks like the best option for me is to buy the software and dongle direct. I'm planning to cable my Futaba 16sz for now, and then perhaps wireless at a later time.

Looking for a Spring sale soon
