Default S2 IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP: GLUE YOUR NUT ON F.S.

Flying my new S2 outside at the park I found a loose spindle after a few flights. I am very lucky. I could have lost a part or two.

But someone flying inside could lose an eye. .

Check/Glue your spindle / feathering shaft nut.

Wow!

Consider leaving feedback on Horizon Hobby's site. The staff is known to monitor such reviews.

Default Loose nuts and helicopters around here

I called a tech guy at HH about the danger/loose spindle. Thanks for the reminder.

They put some black glue on the spindle nut after assembly. It didn't work. Mine was backed out 4 turns or about 2 mm loose. I am glad it did not fly off.

I removed the nut and cleaned off the black glue. Using a toothpick I put some blue thread locker into the nut and voila! It won't come loose again.

If this anyone else finds the plastic spindle wrenches that come stock with the kit very low quality and not working well, MICROHELI makes a CNC aluminum version. It’s great! No more stripped plastic for me.

Nothing new, here is the addendum from the Nano. Not sure why they didn't put in with the S2.

I use a tiny bit of CA on a toothpick to apply to threads since the grips are plastic, Threadlock weakens the plastic if it gets on it and my hands are not the steadiest

My way of dealing with the nano feathering shaft is a bit time consuming but it works. I pull off the feathering shaft and apply some thread lock to the nut, and then let is set for a day. When I reinstall the feathering shaft, the dry thread lock does a great job of holding the nut in place.

I always use thread lock on the feathering spindle nut. The best (and least messy) way I have found to do is as stated above. Apply it directly to the nut, not the FS screw threads. The reason for this is so that thread lock (or whatever you decide to use) does not get onto the blade grip bearings when you insert it through the grip.

If you don't have a pair of extra fine pointed tweezers, use a toothpick point and apply a very small amount into the FS nut. Tighten it up and fly!

I remember when the very first MCPX came out and the blade grips were breaking/flying off.. They ended up having to come out with a V2 of them. I sure was glad i didn't buy one of the very first ones.

I also do the following like people mentioned above.: apply some blue thread lock to the nut, allow it to dry overnight. Then put it back on, You will find it much tighter as you turn it back onto the shaft.

And use caution not to apply thread locker to bearing or plastic

My spindle nut came off in flight. Blades flew off like yellow darts. Thankfully not anywhere near eye level.

Two days prior I had replaced the spindle shaft. I did use loctite applied directly to the nut, then attached the nut to the shaft. Upon inspection, there is even evidence of the fine white threadlocker layer on the spindle shaft threads.

Weird. Shouldn’t happen. Might try the day-old-loctite method next time. Or maybe just more loctite.. I’m usually pretty thin with the application.

On the plus side, I learned an advantage of brightly colored blades! Easy to find afterward.

I will absolutely do a better job of checking helis before flights.

Now that the fs is off of the heli, go ahead and slather on the thread lock, wipe off any excess, and leave the nut on for a day or so. Once you install onto the heli, it will be pretty stiff to turn the nut, but that's perfect. Probably should frequently check for loosening, too.

What type of thread lock are you guys using? I have been using red for years. The red is a lot stronger but I use it sparingly so I can get it off when needed. I haven't had a spindle nut come off ever and that's with brushed, brushless and outrunner brushless Nano's.

I remember on the CPS and CPX the spindle nut used to have a black rubbery coating on it when taking it off for the first time. I am assuming they started using something different on the S2.

I like the Permatex thread lock. I use blue on the nano fs, and I use red on anything bigger. I have never had a fs let go, ever.

I have flown (and crashed) my CPS much more than the S2. There was some black goo-ish substance on the CPS but the S2 was clean. After about 6 flights or so the S2 started to loosen so took it apart and re-tightened. Don't know how many flights it will hold. I will look into the dry Loctite tip since I have had very bad experiences with disintegrating plastic on other Blade helis when they come in contact with Loctite. I was planning on using the toothpick that's recommended by Blade on the nut but I like the dried Loctite tip.

I found the toothpick doesn't put on enough thread lock without getting it on the plastic. Pulling the fs out of heli is the most effective way.
