Default Sudden Rotor RPM Loss

Just wondering if I'm having an ESC failure - anyone have trouble with the 45 amp E-Flite ESC that comes in the heil?

Details:

Finally got my Blade 360FX 3s flying well with a Spirit Pro. So I've been fine tunning the Spirit for 3d flying - cranked up the cyclic limit to about 10 deg and the colective to 12 deg.

Did a couple flips yesterday, and the heli lost rpm on about the third one. Hit the throttle hold just before impact and landed hard, breaking the skids. I chalked it up to me being rusty on flips or possibly not having it in IU2.

Repaired the skids and flew it again today. Pulled a loop, did three flips, pulled another loop and - at the bottom of that loop, rotor lost rpm again. I hit the throttle hold and managed to autorotate a bit, landing hard again upright, breaking skids again.

Am I working the factory ESC too hard running that much pitch? I don't know for sure that the ESC is the problem, but thinking of replacing it with a Talon 60 amp, just to be sure.

well it about has to be the FBL or the ESC right? Maybe the battery I guess not supplying enough juice - get a brown out - if the battery is old and weak?

Yeah that's all I can think of as well. Battery is a nearly new 3200 mah without any dents. Hopefully not the new Spirit FBL. I'm going to replace the ESC as the first step in the process of elimination. And be ready to autorotate at all times!

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. I'm about to build my first heli (oxy 4 max) .. if I wind up like the brain 2 alot, I might retrofit one on to the 360cfx as the stock one has many quirks tho for my limited flying ability it seems to work ok.

Its nice to have an FBL with a rescue mode, or at least a self-leveling stability mode, neither of which the stock one has. Even a good pilot can get distracted or disoriented in poor visual condtions. Or when practicing a new stunt. You can configure the Spirt either way, really impressed with that FBL.
fiddle likes this.

Ah-ha! Found the problem. When I upgraded to the Castle Talon 60amp ESC, I used Castle LINK to set heli mode and turn on the governor, but just took the default settings for gov.

Today I went back into Castle Link and used the manual settings option for the gov. That's what fixed it! The default settings apparently had the head speed way too low. Once you enter specs for the heli, Castle Link recommends the constant throttle settings for N, IU1 and IU2, which I also updated, since they were different than from the Blade manual. Here's what you have to put in to Castle Link:

Pinion: 10T
Main: 135T
KV: 3400
Poles: 6
Cells: 3
Head Speed: 30%, 70%, 100%

Well, I thought I fixed it! Actually, what I fixed was the slugish slow response due to a head speed too low. But I still have the sudden head speed loss, when switching from agility mode to stabilized mode with the Spirit Pro. I wonder what could be causing this? Just busted landing skids and stripped two servos as a result. For the third time.

I'll post this question over in the Spirt forum as well.
