Default New NX4

Stretched to 510 with X5 tail. Gonna be running RotorTech 510s. Just need a few things here and there to finish her up.

OS 55 HZR-DRS on 17T pinion, targeting 2450rpm.

Yeah it's a straight up X5 tail. I bought the tail assembly that comes with the TT and ends already assembled, a pushrod, the CF CNC boom supports, and that's it for the tail.

For the head I had to buy Gaui X5 grips. I originally planned on just drilling out the grip holes to fit a 4mm bolt, but when I tried taking the head apart to change to the red dampers the bolts were to unbelievably tight in the spindle that it snapped my high quality Wiha 3mm hex driver off in the bolt, even with tons of heat from a soldering iron (hot enough that the grease and oil in the bearings started smoking!).

Ended up having to CUT THE GRIPS with my Dremel and use two sets of vice grips to twist the spindle bolts... absolutely ridiculous, but I wasn't too upset because I really needed to get X5 grips anyway.

There were probably better options on how to do this non-destructively, but like I said I needed X5 grips anyways, and had I got them off without damage I would have had grips that I didn't need that I would never be able to sell.

Anyway... got my canopy modded and it fits fine now. Relocated the canopy posts for a bit more room up front, but only *after* I cut a hole in the canopy to fit the Brain2 HD, which is now pointless

dang I had the same issue with my x3l head but in the end I managed to disassemble the head with only damage to the spindle. It was brand new out of the kit/box and even in the manual it states that it is only assembled hand tight at the factory. Not sure whats going on.

I am also using the HW UBEC 10A on my nitro with a standard non-hd fbl and push glow.

It was insane tight. Even with lots of heat it snapped the end off my Wiha driver and the end was stuck in there good, impossible to remove it. It took almost all my strength to break the bolts free with vice grips.

I need to try that canopy relocating mod on my GX4. I'm having hell squeezing everything inside that itty bitty canopy.

Definitely gives you more space. I also run the canopy above the little clip tab thing, I don't even use the clip because the battery holds the canopy from going anywhere, but putting the clip on top would probably work.

Bit the bullet and went to LiFe RX pack on the NX4. I hate having BECs on nitros but my servos aren't HV so I was faced with A. Dealing with and accepting another point of failure or B. spending way too much on a LiFe pack and have to count flights instead of relying on RX voltage. I chose option B. Not sure on CG (don't really care either) but it definitely fits much better.

I've had good luck with LiFe / A123 batteries on my nitros. On my NX4 (37 engine) I use only about 175ma per flight, on a ~1600mah LiFe. I had to do the same thing in mounting the canopy between the clip plate and the battery. Has been good for over 6 years like that.
Are you running a governor? I couldn't see any sensor wiring...
Keep an eye on the swashplate, mine would get loose.. too much play. I re-staked the bearing a couple of times, then just got a "Formula" swash. Seems much better now.
I got about 5 years out of the Gaui brushless servos before one of the cyclic failed.
Fun little heli! I may turn mine into a NX5 when the 37 finally dies...

Yes I'll likely be running governor. I just got the sensor yesterday and installed it, that's why it's not in any of the pictures. I'll probably run curves at first until the engine its broken in again, it's not a new engine but the ring is. The engine has mods done to the crank and sleeve (porting mods) by a friend so it should rip.

FYI, there is zero difference between the NX4, X4II, and X5 tail parts. They are identical except for length.

Also, keep a close eye on servo temps when stretching, "normal" mini servos are very limited in torque and speed (hence why you don't see them often on 500+ models flying hard 3D) since they run a small servo motor. I sure am not saying they won't work, many use minis on 600 size birds flying low HS and/or smooth 3D, but just to keep a close eye on temps for a bit to make sure they are not getting overloaded.

Obviously it depends on how hard one is pushing there model,, headspeeds, blade efficiency, and the servo in question, but I have seen many "normal" mini servos (including my own Align DS515's on a goblin 500 running 500mm blades) fail due to overloading them with hard 3D for too many flights on a 500mm+ bird.

If you ever need to purchase new cyclics, try to find mini's with the motor sticking out the side of the servo case, this means there running a full size servo motor in a mini servo, not a mini motor. The larger full size servo motor usually means a cooler running servo(high heat is a servo killer), far more torque, better speeds, and can take more load and abuse, at least from my experience. These mini servos with the larger motors handle hard flying with 500mm to 550mm size machines just fine from what I have seen.

As requested,

I put a set of ALIGN 520s I had lying around for the pictures, but I'll be using RotorTech 510s to actually fly with.

She's ready to go... just waiting on decent weather

I'll be ordering some KST X15s soon to replace the GAUI servos.

I have always been curious what the nx4 would be like with a pull start OS 32.... 470 mm blades.

For doing aerobatics and sport flying..
