Default Nx8 feels cheap

So just came back to hobby after a 3 year break. Of course I sold my Dx9 this winter before the bug hit me again.
Anyways just picked up nx8 at local hobby shop and it sure does feel cheap and unimpressive. My Dx9 gen 1 felt much nicer.
Anyone else feel this way?

What feels cheap about it?

NX certainly wasn't going for fancy looks. It's a plain and simple design, but I think it works.

Something else that may contribute to this perception is the weight, or lack thereof. The NX series is a little lighter than a DX9. The NX10 comes with a bigger battery, and that makes the weight pretty comparable to a DX9 (within an ounce).

Otherwise, I think the ergonomics of NX are fine, the switches are the same as DX9 and other Spektrum TX's, and the gimbals are very similar to DX9.

The technical advancements over DX are where the money is at - newer CPU, more internal storage, USB-accessible storage inside (not totally dependent on SD cards), color screen, bigger screen, adjustable antenna, and USB game controller support for simulators are all new features. The DX series literally ran out of computing power to support all of the new features on the receiver side, making it necessary to upgrade the platform.

I can understand the physical light weight may make the radio feel cheap. I had the same thoughts when I switched to VBC Touch, especially coming from Jeti DS-24. Now that I don't use a neck strap, I appreciate light weight radios. I know many folks who like to "upgrade" the radios to the aluminum case. For me, I would have stuck with Jeti longer had they offered a lighter weight plastic case for their radios at the time.

Yeah maybe it's the weight that is throwing me off. Or maybe it's the all black. I never had black before lol.

I imagine it won't be long before after-market skins will be available for this relatively new transmitter.

Side by side comparison of the NX10 to my DX9 Black before I sold it. IMO the plastics are improved on the 10. Weight was very close , ergonomics and switch placement are about the same. The biggest improvement are the gimbals. Super smooth out of the box, with adjustments all made from the front of the Tx.

I ordered the nx10 returned it because it felt cheap to me. Something also fallen off inside like a loose nut scared me. Im not gona pay 500 bucks for a walmart feel transmitter and rattles as you shake it. Along with all the twitching issue I decided to return it. I turned around and git me a new dx9 black for 300.

Sorry to hear you weren't happy with the NX. Good you were able to get your money back out of it and get something else.

The rattle noise was probably the power button. Many NX owners have noticed that, also thinking something was loose inside (myself included). Gently holding the power button in place while shaking the radio usually shows that the rattle noise has stopped.

Very happy indeed with my NX8 - great feel, great look and more importantly, great features. I have found nothing that disappoints me about it or makes me regret having made the decision to step up from a DX6 to the NX8.

if any or all of the NX series have corrected these two problems from the DX series (sans DX9) then they are improvements:

1) no charge light. No way to know if its charging or if it is done charging (DX9 had a light). Several times I had my dx8g2 on charge only to find out it didn't actually charge for some reason.

2) Terrible gimbals. Felt like someone spilled soda in the thing.

The lithium battery seemed like an afterthought in the design of the DX6G2/DX7G2/DX8G2 case. They originally intended it to run on AA batteries to lower the up-front cost of the DX6G2. Then they came up with a rechargeable battery that was included with 7 and 8, but the entire thing including the charger went into the AA battery compartment. That's why there was no charge indicator on the front of the radio.

NX did fix that. Not only did they add a light on the front (it's a separate light, not the Spektrum logo/RF light), but they also made it compatible with typical USB charging.

Gimbal feel is something that's going to be personal preference. I never used one of those newer 6/7/8 radios, so I can't compare one of those to DX9 or NX10. I can say that I think NX10 feels very, very similar to my DX9.

My NX8 gimbals are very smooth. Collective is without doubt, the smoothest I have had with any Tx. It came out of the box quite well set-up for collective but I still backed the friction/ratchet screw off slightly and it is now very 'free 'n easy'.

Flight forgot to mention that it also has a nice charging feature whereby you can check charge status by pushing the on/off button during the process.

Sticky throttle stick is very easy to fix with the “Teflon Mod”. I just assume that any radio I buy I will have to do a “Teflon Mod”.

Really? You had to do a Teflon Mod on your VBC Touch? I didn't. I like a tighter collective gimbal. That was the downfall on the dx8g2 ...

Yes. I’ve done a “Teflon Mod” on the following:

VBCT
Jeti DS-24
Jeti DS-16
DX8 Gen2
Futaba RealFlight Elite USB transmitter
Spektrum DX USB transmitter

Major stick smoothness improvement with every single one of those transmitters. I can make the throttle stick tight or loose, and the stick is smooth throughout the whole up/down range without any “catching”. I wish I had known about this modification prior to selling my other transmitters. The “crappy” USB transmitters with the “Teflon Mod” turn out smoother than any of my $1000+ transmitters without the modification.

To be clear, I am not using the white plumber's tape described in the original Teflon Mod. I use this mouse tape.

I cut a thin strip to size with a hobby knife. Then I adhere the strip of tape to the half-moon gimbal mechanism.

Teflon Mod on a Jeti radio

Teflon Mod on the Futaba style RealFlight Elite USB controller

I don't remember what radio this is

My NX10 gimbals were silky smooth right out of the box. No Teflon mod needed , just a small adjustment in tension was required. My DX6 G3, and DX9 were very sticky, but working the sticks between flights kept them smooth without having to bust open a case to add a strip of PFTE.
