Talking Packing ONE bag for IRCHA

I am so excited, it is finally coming true, I am going to IRCHA

Just got all my travel details sorted out and purchased the ticket. I thought a long time whether to fly at IRCHA or not but I think since I've got the chance to do it I just have to!

So now comes the problem: I am from Germany and I fly to the US for business and I've got exactly one bag and one hand luggage. So what do I absolutely have to take? I will drive up from Cincinnati on Friday after work and stay until Sunday afternoon in a rental car.

What are the things I have to have and what could I probably borrow from my fellow pilots at IRCHA or buy there?

My plan so far:

Bag:

  • Oxy 4 360mm (maybe disassembled in hand luggage)
  • Small charger and charging cables for battery packs and TX
  • Screwdriver set
  • Pliers
  • Pitch Gauge

Hand luggage:

  • Transmitter
  • 3 x 6S Battery pack

Still to decide:

  • Maybe in the US I will buy a really cheap tent at Wallmart and try my luck primitive camping. A hotel may be better since I don't have any real camping gear in the US, but I don't want to miss any of the action at the field ;-)
  • How does charging work at IRCHA? Do I need to have a power supply or do they provide 12/24V power?
  • What spare parts should I take, if any? Can you get Oxy spares locally?

Ohhh, this is all crazy

Awesome, see you there!
Let me try to answer some of your questions...

First of all, make sure you check all applicable regulations regarding LiPo batteries on commercial flights. Maybe check with some other pilots who've travelled here internationally to see what they do. You can also consider buying a few packs when you get here and selling them before you leave.

If you get a cheap tent, unless you're some kind of wilderness survival expert, you're probably not going to sleep well. August weather in Indiana is very hard to predict--it could be 90F one night and 45F the next. If you really don't want to get a hotel perhaps plan to buy a sleeping bag and roll it out in your rental car.

There isn't any electricity provided at the flight line, but most of your neighbors will have a generator. Bring your charger, and just ask to borrow an outlet. They won't ask for anything in return but you can spot them a few dollars for gas if you wish.

Oxy parts will be available on-site from Helidirect, and if you end up needing any tools just ask any of your neighbors or go see the Oxy team pilots and they will help you out.

That is awesome! Maybe I'll see you there. I only live an hour north of there and usually show up Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Don't fly though - just watch.

There's only 1 thing worse than camping in Ohio, and that's camping in Indiana.

Spend the money on a hotel room.
Your body will thank you.

You're not wrong. That's why I bring a travel trailer.

Ok, you convinced me, the hotel room is booked and the tent will stay at Wallmart

I would say.......SAME.....but most likely won't have a generator; usually charge, if needed, over at site three's power station.

But if I run across ya, can use any tools you need.

You will have a blast! If you have common spares that are small, I would throw them in. Borrowing tools is easier, but if your missing one part fixing a crash, you are grounded. Helidirect will have parts there but common ones do sell out. If they don't have something, ask. Their warehouse is fairly close and may be able to re-stock the following day.

You may want to buy a chair stateside, lots of folks will share a corner of their canopy, but may or may not have extra chairs. Grab water or drinks at a store, you will need it in the summer heat. Consider sunscreen if you burn, no fun becoming burnt. Walmart is close and has almost everything. Plan on walking a ton or you can rent a golf cart. It's a big place.

Lots of activity Friday and Saturday (you don't really need sleep), many head for home on Sunday, so it's a great day to get more flying in. Stay late Friday as the informal night flying can get very entertaining! There is usually competition night flying Saturday.

Hopefully for a guy from Germany they can make some sort of arrangement as he is not likely to be an AMA member since that is an America thing. Their Districts (https://www.modelaircraft.org/about-...rict-web-sites) page does not show Germany as one of their districts.

Guys, I'm so excited. It is so great to get that many responses and offers for help and support!

The offers for getting a spot on the generator help me a lot, so that I don't have to take 55 fully charged packs on the plane

Regarding the AMA membership I already got information from Robert "Full Montee" in another post:

"For overseas visitors, visit the AMA during the week on-site, and they will get you set up as a guest."

Nice. He would know - he is on the IRCHA board.

Ok, another hurdle passed: all went smoothly at security control at the airport in Düsseldorf

I managed to cause a smile on the agent's face with this:

Is the toilet paper shortage seriously the only news going out from the U.S.? That was over quite a while ago...
