Solar Generator charging lipos with Logo 800 flight
This is something fun I wanted to try.
I just wanted to share, I have been testing out Solar Generators to charge our lipo batteries. I have charged at 10 and 15 amps parallel and in series and both have worked out. I bought a small unit to test it and see how it works and well it does work. I will be buying a bigger Solar Generator with more solar. Again, this is just something fun for me and since I have 3 14s, I leave with them charged and charge once or twice while at the field and then exercise my vocal cords the rest of the time.... Talk I had a fan setup on the table but it's not in the pic, I plan on posting more.

That would be perfect. Looking at either a 3000 or 3600-watt solar generator that can take that solar charge input.

How big and heavy would that be? I don't know much about these, but that would be more watts than my 1000w internal combustion generator.

You were looking for "portable" solar generator ? It's not going to be portable at all with solar energy.
Weight to energy ratio is way too behind internal comb powering. If portability is not an issue, then panels can be fixed on top of the small roof in that field . |

I was suggesting plugging panels output directly to charger, maybe dc-dc regulator could be added but not necessarily. Btw, why you are comparing with Honda 3kw? You can go with 2kw silent generators. |

The Delta pro is not a solar power system, it's a battery.
The Delta pro battery can be charged from any source, including solar, but no solar panels are included with the Delta Pro. Max charge rate is 1200W, it would need a very large fixed solar panel array to provide that much power. Realistically this is a battery that you would use to charge from at the field without solar, then re-charge the battery during at home. to put some context on the size of panel you would need to generate 1000W. In perfect conditions, a sunny location, direct sunlight, not a cloud in the sky the input solar power to the panel is about 1000W per square meter (this is a hard limit unless the sun gets brighter!). A typical panel is about 20% efficient, so each 1M sq panel will in perfect conditions produce about 200W. So to get 1000W you would need at least 5M sq of panels (54 sq ft). And that's on a perfect day, if it was winter or cloudy, double it or treble it or more.

The Delta pro gets its power from electricity and can be charged from solar and used while charging with solar.
We can call it a battery powered generator I am having fun here but I get what you're saying, solar generator just sounds coooooler. Quote:

It's silent at the field, no noise and I have a fan plugged in to keep the bugs and cool us down. It might not happen anytime soon, but when it does you will pull up to a RC field and all you'll hear is people talking and flying.... One day

I think most of you are missing the point, my main reason for doing this was fun for ME.
I only charged at 1c per battery on this little setup, which is one 7s 5000 mah battery, this equals 129.5 watts. So two of these are 259 watts. 1c charge rate is 259 watts At 2c charging two 7s is around 518 watts, my charging needs aren't that high. Buuuut if I had a battery generator with the capacity of 3600 watts charging at 2c with No Solar Panels.... this would last for about 6.9 hours of me charging 2 7s batteries. After flying, my packs are around 3.83v per cell, charging at 2c takes me about 30min. I could technically charge 2 packs in 1 hour for about 6 hours with no panels.

Only time you might need to take panels to the field is if you were away for a few days and needed to 'top-up' the battery. Otherwise the most efficient use of this system would be to charge it up at home, which could be done with non-portable (cheaper and more efficient) solar panels if you like.

Now my battery gen doesn't die as fast because it is charging while being discharged. I said it would be nice to have I don't own a 3600w solar gen. If I say I want to call it a solar generator because I like the way it sounds, that's what I'll call it. It's used as a marketing term. When I do a tic toc with the heli, I don't call it a backwards and forwards upside down and right side up helicopter thrust move, it's a tic toc cler. Much quieter at the field.

A few of us get it. I have been charging from solar for 6+ years now. This forum doesn't seem to be a real positive place to chat about it though. It's cool to see someone else using it as well.

Cool man whatever makes it easy to fly as much as you like I am all for it. At our local field it is a very large industrial solar panel farm behind the field and they setup for the club a large table and distribution center where can charge to max all day long it is pretty awesome.
