Default Backyard outing yesterday

Spent 1/2 the day programming and fine tuning the H1 unit on the Trex 450L I just built. Had to do the dance with the compass calibration but it wasn't working for some reason on the PC in the workshop so I had to install on my laptop and take it outside to get it done.

I recharged the batteries several times and did test flights. Managed to do the circle flight in the yard there as well as the figure 8 auto flying circuit. I saved the return to home and inverted flight for the field on the next outing.

Default Outing in Medfield this afternoon

So today I got the call back from the customer and he said he could meet me at the field to fly and pickup his heli. Great, I packed up and took my gasser to have a couple of flights myself and headed out to see him.

I had a chance to put 1 flight on my whiplash before he arrived and then it was time for show and tell. I explained everything for him how it works and demonstrated the heli flight in manual and GPS mode. Did the circle flight, figure 8, inverted flying as well, and also return to home. Everything looked good I saved the last battery for him and had him follow my directions how to get it going and watched him fly. I took a picture of a happy customer at the field glad to see he was enjoying it! He landed it with return to home even though I told him he can fly it back and land himself I think he liked that feature

Default Nice calm day at the field today

You know its dead calm and indoor flying conditions when you get the paragliders out and about next to the field I also noticed today a large number of dragon flies, taking care of all the mosquitoes that were coming out of the trees behind me, that was nice to have them around I only saw a couple of mosquitoes and none managed to bite.

I took the night Whiplash has not been run in about 3 months time figured it needs to be used a little bit. I also noticed a little shimmy in the frame I think I need to look at the dampeners in the head. Will do that and try it again next outing to see if that is fixed.

Had time to do one more after with the day Whiplash. They are both running very smooth it was an enjoyable day.

Default Not an enjoyable day at the field

Another dead calm day, overcast and humid today, and for some reason a 1000 mosquitoes out and about. I stopped by the gate to open it, by the time I got back in the truck there were like 9 mosquitoes in my truck. I killed them all and got to my spot, got out and there were at least a dozen trying to attack me. They all flew up out of the grass when I disturbed it. No dragon flies to be seen, I spent a good time trying to kill everything around me.

Later I decided to move the truck to the runway edge to get away from the bushes, and while it helped it still wasn't perfect. I filled one tank for the night Whiplash to try it after I serviced it yesterday, and it took me about a 1/2 hour to fly that tank out as the mosquitoes wouldn't leave me alone. Fly 1 minute land kill a couple and repeat.

Good news is that the machine no longer has a shimmy now and is flying great, bad news is that I couldn't enjoy the flying and decided to pack it up and go home after finishing the one tank.

Had the 1005 also but no way to fly and enjoy...

Default Outing this afternoon before the rain

Time to air out the other two birds, they have been sitting in the basement for a while it seems. Today was humid and overcast, but overcast is good to allow me to go earlier as no sun to beat on me. The mosquitoes will be out, but I had a plan. Park closer to the runway and flush the ones in that area out, kill everybody, and then start flying. Seemed to work OK for me today, no bites and I killed at least a dozen then there was a lull and no one bothered me as long as I didn't move around to new grass areas.

I flew the Spectra for 3 in a row to make 3500 flights even. September 21st, 2005 to August 9, 2021, almost 16 years in the making to get that many 18 minute flights logged. Then I put it away and flew the 1005 for a flight before I felt a couple of drops. Decided to pack up and go get some lunch and it started raining on the way home, good timing for me.

Raja, you missed a great time at IRCHA! No bugs, great weather, sunny skies, and plenty of room to fly.

Default Back to business again

Got a call today to meet up at the field and fly the conversion quad again. It was a hot day overcast but quite humid. I took the 1005 to catch some flights in between while batteries were recharging.

I got several short sorties out to test and feel out the model. Did one 100% full wing conversion but the craft was not responding as expected so I converted it back and landed normally. Some updates to be done before the next outing.

Meanwhile I managed 2 flights on the 1005. Its running a little hot for my tastes I'm going to reinstall the Wally fan tonight.

After I crashed my Protos 500 a few months ago I figured it would be awhile before rebuilding it. But after looking it over and doing a price check for the parts needed it was a lot cheaper than I thought. Even the canopy was salvageable. The only hard part was finding new tops for the servos (JR 3517mg) These aren't made any more but with a few emails to Deeforce I was able to substitute 3411 aluminum tops for the old plastic ones and problem solved.

Put the first flights on it last week and had my buddy help me tach the headspeeds. The gearing is different using the new XLPower main and tail gears so my old throttle curves needed updating. For some reason the Ikon2 governor stopped working so I had to switch to the esc gov. Today I put 2 nice flights on it. Still don't have the canopy done with its new paint but still enjoyed getting it back in the air. Updated the canopy posts to the XLP 380 magnetic posts and canopy mounting is literally a snap now.

Other helis in the rotation have gotten a few more flights from the Triabolo to the NX4. Flying between 6am and 7am is the norm in the desert right now until the heat recedes. Actually for July/August it hasn't been as bad as normal but the wind still kicks up pretty good.

Default Hot and Humid today

Its like tropical Trinidad weather is here with us this week. Yesterday I went to the field and my 1005 didn't start after I changed the fan, so I ended up mowing my parking space as short as the runway to get something done.

Today I had fixed the broken coil wire and went out to try it. Short grass helped alot with the mosquitoes, they don't "park" in it they like taller grass and this way when you get there there isn't a swarm coming after you when you exit the truck.

1005 flew good, the fan is running cooler about 9 to 15 degrees. I think I can improve it further I need to close the gap between the shroud and the engine support plate. I did 4 flights and then did the edges with the lawn mower so I can turn my truck around in short grass as well when I arrive.

Default Another tropical day

Just like yesterday the sweat is pouring out but its OK I'm there to test and break in a new gear on the Spectra. Gear ratio now 6.64 I like it alot better than the original 7.15 where the motor was screaming all the time. Now I can get more headspeed with a more relaxed motor

So I put it through the air for 4 flights in a row until the TX battery was flat. I had the Whiplash with me in case something wasn't right with the Spectra but all worked good so I flew it. Tonight some minor adjustments to the servos and demon for the higher head speeds and also I redid the tank plumbing inside as it was sucking air when the tank was getting low. Should be all better now.

Default Testing fixes

Another hot day at the field 88 degrees this afternoon. I got the 1005 and the Spectra with me. First off the 1005 to check the performance of the fan in the heat now with the closed shroud over the engine plate on the bottom. Happy to report it ran about 7 degrees cooler so that did help I am happy with the results of my efforts.

Next up the Spectra-g with servos that were programmed to keep the swash level throughout the throw plus the repair of the tuning in the gas tank as it was sucking bubbles below 1/3 tank. Both of these worked great and I have to say the gear ratio is much much better now I can run anywhere between 1650 and 1950 head speed no worries sounds great throughout, whereas with the stock 7.15 gear ratio it sounded like it was screaming at 1840 head speed and that's the max I would go. Also rolls are not barking as much (reduced aileron throw 5 points) and are much more axial due to servos staying together with each other up and down the collective throw.

Went out there today to attend a local fun fly close to Larry's house. Been there before, its a nice gathering plus they had some night flying going on this evening so I was asked to bring my night machine.

By day I put 5 flights on my Whiplash V2, and to end the night I put 2 more on my night Whiplash. Overall it was a great day we had a good time. I made some sandwiches and made a day of it at the field. Supposed to be going on tomorrow also, but it might rain we'll see what happens with Henri.

Default Back to the field

Visibility was so so due to the fires around central valley. Put four flights on whiplash V1. A Coyote stopped by this morning, asking for food . I steered the coyote towards the bunch of rabbits hiding behind the containers and continued on with my flying.

Default Outing this afternoon in Northampton, PA

Went to a friend's house to fly at his own private back yard field. Nice space with mowed lawn that opens up to a huge corn field and beyond the size of Virginia field if not more. It was hot and we sat by the house in the shade with the sun to our backs. Flew my gasser there he was impressed he has one but never saw one flying like I did. Did all sorts of flight routine plus the usual dozen autos in all variations

Also got to fly his turbine Whiplash for him and show him how to work it. He bought lunch and it was a nice hangout outside even though it was quite hot at 90F.
