Default Hobbywing esc

Hey guys I just finished setting up a new sab goblin 580 and I need help on several things
First here my list of components
Hobbywing Platinum 120 ESC
Brain2
X-nova 4025-1120
Sprektrum NX 8
First I did the high and low points with the transmitter, then I went thru all the steps with the programming box and also set it to sto gov
Ran the Heli for about 20 seconds at mid stick

Do I need to do anything else for the Governor now ???

Also, in normal mode the engine will not start till I’m at Mid Stick, why ???

And third Hobbywing want to know the Motor Timing and I can’t find that anywhere

After the Store process, just unplug the battery, then you’re done.

I hope someone else will step in on the ‘Normal Curves are Bad’ lecture…. The ESC will not turn on until the throttle command exceeds 40% (about mid stick as you’ve noted) When running the governor, it is expecting a constant throttle input, or flat throttle curve. The throttle % sets the RPM and it should only change if you change the desired headspeed. So below 40% the ESC doesn’t turn on, that’s how the ELF and Store governors work.

…someone else can enlighten you on the other disadvantages of a ‘Normal Curve’ throttle. Just don’t do it, flat curves only…

I use the PC software connected to the Program Box. Not sure if you’re only using the Prog Box…

Thanks Jim. I only have a linear throttle curve on Normal Mode to take off on. The other two flight modes are flat lined %

the general practice is to eliminate the linear throttle curve for normal and simply set a flat curve (like your idle up 1 and idle up 2). to start and stop the motor, you will need to set-up a "throttle cut" switch. this is what starts and stops your motor. in addition, you can set-up an autorotation switch for auto's.

eliminating the linear curve also eliminates the potential for forgetting to go to idle-up when doing acro. No worse feeling of going inverted only to find out negative pitch will stop your motor.

best to learn to fly with flat throttle curves and a throttle cut switch.

I'm using Hobbywing, and I had the 40% problem just as you report. This is how I fixed it:
- First, with the Governor desactivated, I callibrated the min/max throttle, just as you.
- Second, I used a Hobbywing programmer to change the ESC configuration: External Governor (because I want to use the governor of my FBL), No Ramp-Up (because my FBL's governor has already a ramp-up)
- Then, I enabled again the Governor of my FBL, and I went through the configuration steps as described in the FBL manual.

Advantages
- When configured with external governor, Platimum ESC have a 5% threshold before activation (instead of 40%). Therefore, the engine starts as soon as you release the HOLD button.
- When removing the ESC ramp-up, you're left with only the one from FBL. Two ramp-ups fighting each other produce irregular start-up regime.

Also, never I use the "Normal" mode. Even for landing, I don't find it practical to have a response to throttle that is different from the rest of the flight.
