It would be interesting to see how the cyclic phase of the rotors is mechanically achieved. That's a lot of cyclic motion considering the fast rotation of the rotors!

Older than you think, they have been in widespread use in tugboats for a century now where they are known as a cycloidal propeller or a VSP (Voith Schneider Propeller). They allow the boat to change thrust direction in 360 degrees almost instantly. Modern systems have station holding technology that compensates for currents and rough water and keeps the boat perfectly still.

And yes they have versions for RC boats.

RC-TV Gary King shows off his voith-schneider-propeller driven RC tug. (5 min 45 sec)

A scale RC tug like that is on my bucket list.

Looks like control could be similar to a quadcopter if they get it flying.

Look around Youtube using "cyclocopter" as a search term, there have already been flying examples. Problem is that unlike in water they are less efficient in air compared to a rotating wing. A few years ago Extrapilot was saying that they might be efficient in very small micro drones.

I was thinking similar, no way to auto your way out of a crater with these. Lol

I do wonder if it can compensate losing 1 of the motors though?

I think it would be better as a watercraft myself.

I was thinking of a hovercraft type application, too.

I had a dream on it, they'll just use a ballistic parachute like they put on small planes. This is still a really cool idea. Its got to be virtually vibration free compared to a heli, a lot less moving parts and less points of failure. would be an excellent personal craft due to space savings, less footorint than a car. As every generation says, dang it, i was born too early

As I was saying in my previous post they have been used for that for a century now and are commonly seen on tugboats because they far superior to azimuth thrusters.

I saw that, but I was thinking with the thrusters in the same (horizontal) orientation as they are.

I imagine you'd need a sturdy set of front fenders if it worked
