E550 fbl new style canopy..?
Ok guys let's talk about the elephant in the room.
Don't get me wrong I really like heli, it's flying so nice and i do find the stock canopy growing on me but I'm pretty sure like me you didn't buy it for its looks. So I got to thinking that a speed(ish) style canopy would compliment that thick tail boom nicely (think gaui formula) unfortunately I can't find anything on the market and have no artistic flair or fibreglass skill. The idea of this post is just to sound other owners out and see if the interest is there and if it is maybe we could get together and pledge/ pester companies into making one? Just a shame that no one who owns a e550 has any experience with the production of an awesome looking canopy and co hosts a fantastic podcast with a wide audience that could stir up some interest. Truth be told, I've already talked to a certain aftermarket manufacturer about some upgrades for the e550, but they think the market would be too small based on the (lack of) popularity of the model. Now, that won't necessarily stop me from trying to make something of my own.

Good to here your on the case Chris. Shame about lack of aftermarket support i love a bit of bling, but I guess business is business and if I want a pretty heli I'll just have to save a few more pennys. Must say though the more I fly it the more I like it.

I actually like that style canopy. I am not a fan of the E700 canopy.
It looks cheap and rushed. The 800 is better. Looks matter to me. One reason I would not buy the 700 if I would ever upgrade to that size. |

Home Built Canopies
Almost as soon as the first kit helicopters arrived in the early 1970s the magazines started publishing wood and ply fuselages to replace the ones being broken.
It's not the most complex or mechanically critical part of a helicopter, so building your own should be possible for most hobbyists, especially at this (technical) end of the business. Start with taking a plaster cast off the original, and use clay to reshape what you don't like before laying up some glass or carbon shells. I'd expect a day's effort should get you a batch of canopies. Personally, I like the E550 canopy far better than most that I see. But for Sunday Best, I prefer a scale Hughes 500 shell on mine.
