Build started, I left all of the bigger parts at home so I can just build up the components then assemble when I return home.

I am really liking all the design features if this helis and all the attention to detail, but what prevents the frame from getting distorted and out of square in a crash? If the frame gets a very slight bend or twist, I imagine it might me impossible to see with visual inspection only and you could go crazy trying to figure out why components in the drivetrain are binding.

Thoughts or experience on this concern?

I haven't crashed a Soxos yet so can't answer from my own experience.

Talking to the factory the frame is not easily damaged and I have seen Dunkan put his models in a few times and he hasn't been damaging the central frames. I dont know what alloy is being used but it feels much more substantial than the soft alloy that some other manufactures use.

Only time will tell but the SRP of the central frame is $120USD, so not a lot more expensive than if you damaged the top and bottom alloy plates on a Goblin or did similar damage on Synergy bending several of the alloy mounting blocks in the frames.

As to how to tell, you can easily feel the backlash in the gear train, I would expect you would feel that change if you bent the frame.

Servos installed.

The included servos are fast and stong. HV and give 0.06 sec/60°speed and 20 kg-cm torque so are over specified for a 550 and wouldn't be out of place on a 700.

As mentioned I'm breaking from the normal build order as I dont have the whole kit with me. The head is together but I haven't put the frame sides or landing gear on as I need to pack the heli down to transport it home before I complete the build.

Another note that applies to all of the Soxos helis is to feel the maingear for vertical movement not just the mainshaft when adding shims to transmission. By shiming to remove any vertical movement from the gear during the initial build it will reduce/remove the need to re-shim after the tail drive bevel gears have bedded in during the first few flights.

My new soxos 550 is coming together quickly. After building up the major components in the UK I am just plugging together the assemblies. Only the electronics to install now so should be able to maiden this week. I've gone with one of the optional canopies from the 600 accessory range as they fit perfectly on the 550 as well.

The cabinet at the front of the heli makes it very easy to keep the wiring neat.

Finished the setup and out for a quick maiden today. It was really windy so I only put one pack through, but it handled the wind well. Flew straight off the bench. I started increasing the tail gains but didn't get much done in one pack. I'll report back after a few more packs.

Hello everyone, here's Valerio Bottero.

I'd like to show you the promotional video I did about the 550, than I'll anwer to some questions.
SOXOS 550 | World Premiere (2 min 51 sec)

First of all I can confirm that is almost impossible to bend the frame, after lots of crashed between me and Dunkan we never got any kind of problem.

Same for the gears, after testing some prototypes the last versions of materials are very strong.

If you guys would like to get some tips or any kind of info let me know here, I'll try to answer

Excelent Video Valerio, can you post up that short flying 550 video you did in the tight space, beside the road, that was a great demo of the 550.

I can also now give some feedback on crashability with the DB7 at least. Had an ESC shutdown on the weekend while low and inverted, managed to auto it down on the head. Only damage was a nick in the blade root of one mainblade.

What's the weight? Will it murder 6s 5000 45c packs?

So far I've only run an older TP 5000mah 60C pack, but it comes down cool (even on the 32deg C day last weekend), as does the motor and ESC. I will be running some 4400mah 45C Pulse packs when I free them up from my DB7 which will move back to 5000mah packs. I'm not a stick banger and fly smooth 3d so I don't load it like a harder flyer would. Lets see what Valerio comes back with.

I only have a set of samsonite luggage scales and I really don't know how accurate they are. The product page says around 2.78kg without packs and my heli comes up shows 2.80kg on the scales I have so I would guess as they tally it gives me some confidence that it is a correct weight.

I am trying to figure out what turnbuckles would fit for the head. What is the length and thread size of the blade grip links?

The standard links are M2.5 and you would want min 45mm rod and Max 50mm (maybe need to trim a mm off at that). Without pulling mine apart I would guess the stock ones are about 48mm.

One option would be to use the turnbuckles off the Soxos DB7. They use M3 threads and larger links but fit the same balls and are 48mm, so they would be a drop in fit.

Thanks Valerio, the top one was the video I was talking about, but the second one is just as good.

I've setup a thread for Soxos general discussions as we don't have a forum for Soxos at this stage.

So how does it work with 45C packs?
This could replace my Protos 500 someday.
It's a beautiful design in my opinion. The alloy fram is the only thing that worries me a little bit. It could make repairs expensive and a lot of work if it bends just a tiny bit in a crash.

I am running 4500mah 45C Pulse packs along with a few other size and C ratings in mine. I am not a hard 3D pilot and fly more precise 3d and big air so I am easier on packs but my packs don't get warm either.

The mainframe is very strong and doesn't bend in normal crashes. Of course it can be bent, but that takes the type of crash that would be a rekit with another model anyway. The one piece alloy frame retails at $120 USD so it is not that different to bending a mainplate and servo plate on a Goblin which I have also seen happen in a major crash as well.
