Default Current Projects - Fury 55 - GT15

As many of you know, I've been testing the OS Max GT15 now for several months in a Raptor G4 helicopter. With some gearing changes its been pretty successful for its intended purpose

however I've always contended that an interesting place to try this motor would be in a 600 class helicopter. Although I know there are some folks working on this, I've not found anything to be available. So I've been working on this layout to combine the GT15 with a Fury 55 setup.

I've attached a couple of photos of the mockup in its current form. Since I don't own a 3D modelling tool, I prototyped a set of frames out of plywood from CAD drawings to verify all the positioning and fit and thats what you see here. Technically this model could probably be hovered but I'll wait to get the graphite parts before doing that

The model is slightly longer and taller than the original Fury 55 but using donor parts from a Whiplash Nitro, it fits together very well. In terms of fit the Whiplash hub, fan and shroud are easily adapted to the motor

This looks very promising. I had the Fury 55 nitro and it was a excellent heli that should be able to handle the added demands of a gasser.

Crap I just noticed something. There's no pull starter on this thing

Talking Yeah

Definately need a pull start option as if there is no generator system in my helis they are not flight ready yet -- not an optional component for me!!

OS isn't going to make a pull start version of this motor, at least not anytime soon

The idea is for it to be an attractive conversion for glow fuel based models that already support spin starting

For the most part I don't really understand why folks (ESPECIALLY beginners) spend the money for a generating system. If you fly for hours at a time it makes sense AND with the more common appearance of EI systems it may wind up being useful there. In those cases I understand.

otherwise its just extra weight and expense AND in most cases it makes it impossible to spin start the motors. Most pilots fly just a few flights per outing, easily handled by a lithium battery system.

I wrote about the pros and cons of generators sometime back, its HERE

Cool Different thoughts on this

Think about this one. The night before my Whiplash maiden flight on 9/19/2012 I fully charged the TX and receiver pack on the wall adapter overnight.

Since then, I have not plugged any charger into the whiplash. So that's 4 months to this day I have not charged the battery pack except for in flight and now its got 134 flights on it. How about that for convenience, like your car. just put the gas in and go.

If you have an EI motor sure you can make the generator support that as well and make for less maintenance and charging on your own.

If you don't fly that much at all, then yes no need to bother with a generator system, its not that much of a hassle to charge up before flying. But yet there is something to be said about not having to charge or worry about the level of the pack on the field. You gain that experience when you put a generator on your heli after which you most likely will never go back to the old way of charging before every outing.

Very nice conversion!!

With this new gasser heli engine I really hope to see a new class of 600 size helis swinging 640-660mm blades.

Happy Autos!!

I'm just looking at it from the perspective of pilots new to gas helicopters.

Its a nice to have............IF you fly for hours at a time on a regular basis which of course you have the freedom to do. Most people fly 2-3 flights a week, maybe a month and go home.

As I described in my article, anybody that goes to the field without knowing the current status and charge of their battery and just relying on their generator to take care of it is being careless. Things go wrong, there's too much at stake.

It bothers me when I hear new pilots (or existing pilots who want to give gas helicopters a try) talk about how they HAVE to have a generator. In some cases the extra $200 discourages them from giving the engines a try and if they tear it up the generator in crashes while getting used to the model......Its just money better spent on parts.

Just a FYI, I have a 2100mAh LiFe pack in my Whiplash gasser. Six 10 minute flights uses less then 1000mAh out of the pack

If I really need more power I also have a 3900mAh pack I can use.

Wow 166ma per flight you have a efficient setup, you must not be running BLS servos. In my Radikal a 10 min.flight I pull out 375ma a flight. If I crank up the head response in the CGY 750 I can pull 850ma a flight.

Looking good Carey, it looks like you could make a set of frames out of G10 simple enough, I have a link to distributor some place that had good prices and you do not need to order a bunch of it, you can get one or two sheets at a time. If you are interested in it I will do some digging for you. I did a quick look and did not see it, but I know I still have it some place.

thanks Mr Hillbilly

Bob Bice, who cut a lot of the frames for Miniature Aircraft when they were here in Florida is cutting a set of frames for me from the CAD layout I did. As soon as he has time to finish them I can put this together in a flyable form.

Default Its In!!!

Mr. Bice delivered the frames to me last week. I had to correct a couple of minor errors I made in the layout however nothing serious enough to keep it from working

once the electronics are in it should be ready to go
