Unexpected Tail Behaviour
I have just started doing flips and similar, and have noticed strange behaviour. This is on a logo 690 with VBar. If I apply full negative collective in the middle of a flip the tail goes sharply left. Most disconcerting at my stage of the game! If I do the flip in a slower manner there is no problem, it appears to be associated with full negative collective.
Otherwise there is no problem flying around, and various settings are around what VBar recommend. Anybody any ideas? |

Tail going left when inverted tail-in means it's not holding.
What happens when you do a full-collective punch out from an upright hover? Does the tail go right?

Could be a number of things. Control loop ran out of pitch to correct torque or tuning is off, also tail blades could be too small for your head speed.

I chased this same issue and realized finally, that it was my own error without me realizing it.

But my helis can handle full collective and full cyclic simultaneously without the tail blowing out. So it is possible to keep this from happening no matter your skill level. Question, what heli,? what headspeed? and how much pitch are you using? |

Looked up the 690 combo. It comes with:
370KV motor recommended 12s battery 15t pinion and 106 main gear ran those numbers through Mr. Mels headspeed calculator and I get: Result for calculation: Estimated lowest voltage during flight: 42.24 Lowest RPM (due to voltage and efficiency) : 1990 For + performance, keep req. RPM below: 2060 For target performance, keep req. RPM below: 2142 For - performance, keep req. RPM below: 2204 I did this because I didn't see a recommended headspeed in the 690 manual I found online. Anyway, seems like your headspeed is a bit below recommended. People do run low HS but most of them have more experience and a smoother touch to compensate for the lower main and tail speeds. I recommended on bumping up your HS 200 RPM and give it another try. If you still get the tail blowing out, maybe drop your max collective to 11 degrees. ( With higher HS and lower pitch, you should have a similar feel as far as at max collective but a stronger tail ) If those don't work, then see if there is a tail speed up kit available. if not, then some larger tail blades if there is room for them. let us know how it goes. |
