Default Q about 500l headspeed

So I bought a used trex 500l dom.

I have never owned a 500 size heli before, and have no idea what headspeed I should be shooting for.

Can someone advise what headspeeds I should be aiming for for sport flying, and some light 3d?

Also is there different tail gear ratio for higher or lower headspeeds, or just the stock gears?

Hi! My advise is to begin with 2500RPM and try to find from there on the HPS that make you feel most confortable. I own a customized 500 ESP (not the same heli, but same size and weight) and I feel very confortable with 2500 RPM for sport flying and even some 3D maneuvers.

And, to the best of my knowledge, there is no aftermarket pinions replacement to change tail ratio. If you'd like some more tail authority, you can always use larger tail blades.

Many find gearing to low, even if you don't best get a upgrade to the Lynx 13T while you can sold out everywhere. I like the 13T better for more gov headroom.

i2RC makes a boom block and adapter to let you swap between 31 and 36t tail gear if you want over 3000 rpms 36t (stock) or under 2800 rpms 31t. If you run a strong tail servo it can do governed 2800 and above very well.

They are currently relocating so if you desire the boom block it could be some time before it's available again.

The reason for higher headspeed on this model is the lower tail ratio of 3.8. I run 3100 rpm for hard 3d, but that is for the tail hold aspect. If you are doing sport and light 3d I would shoot for 2700 rpm and get a feel for the tail.

This, /\ /\ /\ get the 13t pinion no matter what now B4 you can't get it.
yup 2700 min, 2800 good. The tail will wag at 80 and stop around 83-84% throttle

Hi guys thanks for the advice.

I found this tail gear in the 500 upgrades section, and was wondering will this fit the 500l dom for running lower headspeeds?

31t will only work if you have the i2RC block
