Default New BEAM E5 owner

Bought a kit to treat myself to some Korean goodness

Got a sheet of some adhesive fabric:
(ignore the setup tool...)

What does one use the fabric for - I'm clueless

Got my kit from BEAM directly since Kingsta in Germany seems to have closed shop ?
(and the Danes have dropped BEAM)

For some reason it's faster to get a package half around the world than inside EU

...then a few days later I found Vertical in Finland and euro-rchelicopters in the Netherlands

Could it be a dusting cloth?

It's backed with glue, sort of a soft sticker really.

Best guess would be some kind if lining for the canopy ?
(but why ?)

It's not mentioned in the manual, nor can one buy it as spare...

Did a small writeup of my experience so far, tl;dr at bottom:

The whole design is by now a bit dated, lots of empty space inside the frame.
Kit was bought to see if it showed the same fantastic precision as the few BEAM upgrade parts I've bought in the past.
My flying style is Beginner/Sport, trying to keep HS low - thus I'm all for low discload...

Things that annoyed:
It's a hog @23+grams/dm2, all the bling that comes as standard adds up.
(...and I added some more with the counterbearing)

BEAM lists main diameter as 1200mm, which all resellers echo without checking facts (1055mm)
1200mm would have given me a nice 18grams/dm2
In hindsight one should have figured that 1200mm with 465's was a bit off...

Battery mounting is not that flexible, I want to use lighter packs and can't get them as far forward
as needed for perfect balance.

It uses full size servos, good for 3D I'm sure - adds weight for sportflying..

The bad:
Tail hub is not symmetrical, it's machined differently on either side.

Tail grips differed 1/10mm in length and a few 1/100 of a gram in weight,
may not sound like much but it causes imbalance in the most critical part of any heli
Sanded of some material on the offending grip, balance is now OK.

The grips uses the maintenance-friendly layout with the thrustbearing furthest out,
due to the way they are designed/machined - it's not possible to change the order of the bearings.
My grips show a fair bit of lateral play.

Tail belt is slightly too wide in one spot of it's lenght, again adding unnecesary vibration.

The tail control lever is not as pictured, it's a standard plastic piece - this was expected from earlier reviews.
Although it makes it harder to achieve a really smooth tail linkage.

They really have painted their name on every single part, not sure it adds to the looks...

The good:
Except the tailhub/grips, everything is machined exceptionally well.

Every single hole in the frames are exactly the right dimension, and lines up perfectly.

Milled parts are really beautiful, exquisitely chamfered edges.

With the setup-tools and the metal servoarms - setup is a breeze.
Every link spot on from the first try, swash levelled/head zeroed/servoarms squared in one go.

Tailblades was spot on on the balance, plastic blades - thin profile like KBDD's
Root needs a bit of sanding to move inside the grips.

Mainblades was spot on CG and balanced perfectly, this hasn't happened to me for a long time

Overall a very nice kit, taken into account the time this has spent in the milling machine - it's a steal @400usd

It really is beautiful.

tl;dr:
Rotor is 1055mm, not 1200mm.
Tailrotor badly designed/QC'd.
Everything else is top-notch.

Did a short maiden the past weekend.

Setup:
Nexus D611MG - Cyclic
Savox SH1290MG - Tail
YGE 60 ESC - Lightened
Scorpion HK4015-1070 12T pinion
R2 LV2BEC @6.0V
SpiritPro FBL
Hyperion HV LiPo 6S 2400mAh (320grams)

Takeoff weight 2040 grams.

HS ~1500rmp, it's a bit low - I've calculated motor+gearing for 1200mm main disc...

First takeoff was a bit hairy, I rely on expo and I always forget to dial some in

Got it down in one piece, dialed in some expo and took off again

It was a bit windy, coupled with the rather low HS made for a short flight - got it down unscathed.

The low gearing makes a fair bit of noise, a 14T pinion would be better I think(hope).

The 'feel' of the collective is just as good as the BEAM head I bought for my 450,

response is immediate and precise.

Even the tail behaved once loaded up in flight, not that I stressed it in any way...just smooth.

Have to get that 14T pinion in there before next try.

Thanks for the update IamCxZ.... sounds like there's not much to not like...

Did you ever work out what the sticker/cloth was? Perhaps shoot an email to BEAM and ask?

Glad to hear it went together so smoothly, and hope you get much fun from it.

Cheers

even Time flies...

Finally changed pinion to the 14t, forgot to change ratio in gov...

Took off @ 2100rpm, too much of a rocket for my taste

After I got the HS down to 1800 it became more enjoyable,
a bit of FBL tuning left...

But now it has that BEAM-feeling, incredibly precise
trillian likes this.

IamCxZ,

Have you ever ordered from beamrc.com?
I was going to order some of the E5 tail booms and the shipping cost was quoted at $3000.00. I said the hell with that.

Yes I got my E5 from them, paid $38.73 in shipping.

$3000 was that an automatic quote or by an actual person ?

Could be that the weight is configured as 100 Ton's instead of grams...
...wouldn't be the only thing wrong in that Eshop

Only other place I've seen that sell spares are verticalhobby in Finland.

No idea what they charge for shipping and they only have one set in stock..

Then the problem has been going on for a few months. I also checked a few months back with the same cost for shipping. I think I will just stay away from the site.

I must admit I don't have a 'rule of thumb' feel for what a good weight is for a 500 size heli. I'm pretty sure the Trex 500 I had weighed at least that much and it had 430mm blades.

The Avantgarde is quite light for a 600.

Remember,

you can now again get parts from Denmark: www.beamrc.dk

And from www.ercmarket.com in Belgium (beware - the main gears are V1 !!). Only E4 and 600, though.

Cheers
Erik

Oh oops.

As I have a 600, I checked only that.
I'll visit him the day after tomorrow, so I'll ask him what he has
and if he'll please make it available.

Cheers
Erik

Beamrc shop..
Just checked shipping again, this time I went to checkout where you get to choose country...

Otherwise it seems you're quoted in won(1000won~$0.9) for domestic shipping.

For 2 sets of E5 tailbooms - $28 to Sweden and $23 to the USA.

That sounds better. I never went that far to see if it changed any.
