Hot 120 v.4 with AFW on/ low RPM ?
Just noticed a new HW 120 getting too hot to touch for more than a second or 2--
6s Scorpion 4025-1100 on SAB 570 heli. AFW enabled, tuning 15 degrees. Running HW GovStore, in the 50-58 % throttle range I have an Align 550x with same setup (6s, 50-58%, Align 730/960kv motor, AFW on, etc.) and it's only a 100A HW esc. I haven't noticed much heat with that ESC, if any. Am doing mostly hovering/orientations at low-mod RPM's--just wondered if the "AFW" should be keeping the esc on the 570 with the Scorpion from getting so hot. Thanks |

Try looking at your gear train and see if theres any rough spots or maybe a shot bearing.

You are also just hovering so there is no real airflow to cool anything, so you have multiple things that can contribute to heat going on at the same time. You dont say if you are flying the other model with the 100A ESC the same as this one, so the hovering is possibly the tipping point with this model vs. the other if being flown normally. You need to run a head speed that will get you up closer to 60-65% or drop a couple teeth on the pinion if you wish to stay where you are otherwise you are running your electronics on both models very inefficiently AFW or not. AFW isnt there to make up for a bad setup rather than just gearing the model properly IMO. You are also losing a lot or your motors mechanical torque advantage with your current gearing as well. Improperly geared setups will perform poorly, bog on hard moves due to the lack of torque that the governor needs to respond quickly, and all electronics run hotter than they need to be which = shorter flight times.
