Default Going 4s

I have decided to go 4s in my 450 size AS350.
It flies good on 3s but, Sometimes it needs the added power.
Today the weather was perfect so I took it out one last time on the 3s packs, so much fun that I flew 3 packs. The 4s packs should be here in a couple of days.
Time to tear down and change the gearing.

I am surprised that you would lack power on 3s, unless you are using a very old style 430L or similar motor.

I would guess that any 450 scale heli would weigh less than 4lbs, so it should fly scale circuits on less than 200W, and most modern 450 motors would have at least double that which should be plenty for even brisk scale flying.

Are you just changing gearing, or changing to a slower motor as well ?

Colin

It weighs right at 2.75 lbs. I am running a scorpion 2580 kv motor and 12t pinion, 12t Main w/ 11.1 2250 Lipo. Head speed around 2200. Flights of 5 min., battery down to 11.5, cells 3.8.
It flies good as is but, I feel it needs that added climb out power so the motor will not bog down as much.
I am going with a 150t main and 11t pinion, should keep the head speed close to the same.
45 or 50a esc as I am using the stock 35a Align.

Hey I changed mine over to a 4cell I was running a 2200 30c and the Motor is a 2750KV 13tooth I don't know what my head speed is but I Really like how it fly's with the 4cell I have to remove some of the weight I had in the nose oh the ESC is a Hobbywing 40amp
AS350 new VDO( (4 min 43 sec)
I had to reduce the head Speed but I can get up to 7min's and the Batt is at 15.1

The Hobbywing 50a arrived today. It has the gov.feature. May set it up with that. The batteries should be here soon.

At 530W you should have PLENTY of power. Most scale helis run around 50W/lb, slightly more for multi-blade, so at 2.75lbs, you should need about 140W for gentle scale circuits, and should have 4x this power for more aggressive flying.

I would have thought that 5 minutes was quite short for a nice slow headspeed scale heli. Are your lipos still good ? If they have seen better days, that might account for it feeling a bit gutless and short flights.

RPM = 2580 x 14.8 x 0.9 x 11T / 150T = 2520rpm at 100% towards the end of the flight, so 2200rpm means governing to around 87% which is probably OK - a little low, so watch the ESC temps.

Increasing the volts means you should draw less amps - 530W / 14.8V = 36A at full song. I think you should be flying at around 10A on 4s, or 13-14A on 3s, with peaks up to double this on aggressive moves. A 50A ESC should kill it

Thanks Colin,
5 minutes of flying and I am pretty much ready much ready to get it back on the ground, the same with my pod and boom ones after 6 minutes.
I think the 50a will be good as it has the gov. feature and auto bail out.
I have enough parts here that I think I will put together a " crash dummie " to practice auto' s with because it is not a question of how, but when you will need to auto one in.

Flew today on the 4s set up. It flies great, no more motor bog, head speed at around 2200. May even up the pinion to try around 2500 but, for now I am very happy with it.
