New to FPV - camera/transmitter questions
I'm looking to add an FPV camera and Tx to my quad (blade 200qx on a custom frame), but I'm a little overwhelmed/confused by the choices of cameras and transmitters.
I think I'd like to start with this camera: https://www.amazon.com/RunCam-PZ0420.../dp/B00T47QE46 But I'm not sure what transmitter I need to hook it up to. I was looking at this one: https://www.amazon.com/EACHINE-OSD58...dp/B01DEYKVRA/ But the connectors look different, and I probably don't need an OSD on both items. I'm thinking of getting the Eachine VR D2, so obviously the transmitter will have to work with that. Also, maybe a dumb question, but would you normally plug a battery into the transmitter and then it would provide power to the camera? Or do you need to split a line from a battery to each separately? Thanks for any input. |

Because there are so many different connectors, on most FPV systems where your transmitter and camera are made by different companies, you will have to create your own connections between the camera and the transmitter. Either solder directly to each other or find some other way of splicing the Video, 5V+ and Ground lines from the camera to the transmitter.
Not all transmitters and cameras run on the same voltage or have the same voltage ranges. Many transmitters require 12V nominal, and many cameras require 5V. This will be in the documentation. Many transmitters have a built in 5V regulator and can feed the camera this regulated voltage. If your power system is the flight battery directly, you may find that there could be noise in your video feed. This can be solved by something called an LC filter, or you can power the vtx from a cleaner 12V BEC source somewhere on your machine. The irritating thing about some of these systems is that there doesn't seem to be a universal standard. You'll have to look at the documentation for voltage ranges when you get it to make sure your design will work.

Thanks for all the info!
One reason I'm looking at this particular camera is its wide range of acceptable voltages, so I'm less likely to bust it with noob mistakes. But I'm not sure what to do with the strange looking black connector cable thing, or the separate osd output from the camera. I'll have to see if the mfr website has docs online. Am I maybe better off sticking with a single brand for my first foray? |

After further research, I'm now considering this setup for the drone-end of things. But there are still a couple questions...
Camera: Foxeer HS1189 Transmitter: Foxeer TM200 Antenna: Foxeer Omnicloud Headgear: Eachine VR D2 So I think I have everything covered, but I'm a little concerned that the 1200TVL might be too much data to get consistent video from this configuration. Do I need a 600mW VTx instead? I'm in the US so I prefer to go with the lower power to avoid FAA and interference issues. But if I'm flying at the local field with others, is one better than the other? It also doesn't seem like either the camera or VTx have any HUD info, which might be nice to have. Should I look for a different combo, or maybe buy a MinimOSD to inline? Uggh, more weight and wiring. |

Thanks so much for the response!
Do you know what effect this compression issue is likely to manifest in? Will the goggles lag? I'm trying to reduce control lag by focusing on cameras with 20ms latency or so, since I have a pretty fast quad. Since the Eachine goggles I just picked up on Banggood have an 800x480 monitor am I introducing more latency if I use a higher-res camera? I'm pretty much sold on the HS1194 Monster now, for various reasons (convenient OSD cabling and youtube video quality to name a few). But if I'm not going to benefit from its inherent low latency on my cheap goggles... then I'll probably have to look at other options. |

IMO, us helicopter guys are so used to doing extensive research and nit-picking on the tiny details because of the huge expense in our models.
With this FPV thing, I think is a different story. There's so much to learn, and so much individual experience that it's not really needed. You've got a good working combination, so put it together and go fly. You'll have a blast. You'll crash a lot, but you'll learn a lot. After you get into it and start hanging out with other FPV guys, you'll figure out what really works for you and what doesn't. Since the industry moves lightning fast, what you buy this month may be outdated next month. Coupled with low prices, if you want to explore different products, it's quite affordable to do so. In the mean time, the hardware really is the least important part of this whole thing. Learning to fly FPV for me was/is much harder than learning how to build these things.

Yeah I guess I should relax a little. I've got my Blade 200qx on a 3d printed body, so that's a couple hundred bucks and a handful of hours time.
Then I picked up the Eachine goggles for $55 today on Black Friday, a VTx and antenna for another $25 on Amazon... I guess if I spend $30 on a camera and it doesn't work great for me then I'll get something else later. I'm just a big planner And of course it's coming from China, so I have two weeks to sit here thinking about my decisions before I get anything in hand! |
