That 500 design (with the tail belt) is notorious for static discharge issues - so scrape the anodising to ground the boom to the frame and read up any other tips about reducing that - such as silicone grease on the belt etc.

James, I have done that to many times. I copy stuff over and it really screws things up. I have stopped doing it.

Sounds like you are having a good time. Does it hover well? I am sure you have a little issue with size now, it is way bigger then the Cypher.

I have to wait for my taxes to get hear before I can get one. I am also waiting for a guy at work to buy my (2) Raptor 30's for $400.00

The thing sounds mean too...moves alot of air.
What c rating should i use....im sure you will say 30C at least right?
I see alot of people running 20C packs I can get (3) 6S3000 mah 20C for the price of (2) 6S3000mah 30C

I was thinking of getting a couple of these
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...idproduct=9489

Hey guys, I'm still here... just haven't had anything to post about lately, but I read here almost every day."Crashing season" has begun here in upstate N.Y. Two crashes in as many flying sessions, got thru 2 paks each time before Cypher went down. Wish I had an expperienced pilot here that could tell me if it's my poor skills, incorrect setup or both. Tough hobby to learn on your own!!

James the 500 looks good. Thanks for posting the pics. Must be lots different than flying our 400 class Cyphers, huh. I'm dying to get my Atom in the air, but am scared to for fear of dumping it in the dirt! Plus I still need a charger/power supply for the 6s paks, blades and then finish the build.

Hope every body's getting stick time!!

Chris

I am in the same boat. I Live in the boonies of Potter PA. no one here flies Heli. Have tried the Cypher yet. So one question. How does the Cypher handle in the wind? How much is safe? Good flying. Thanks Doc

Doc, look at this... it'll answer your wind question
https://www.ronlund.com/images/cypher/_6180013.jpg

As for how much is safe, I'd say that depends on your skills. Me, I've flown in a slight, constant wind a few times and it went well, but just hovering around. Dru has wind all the time I think, so he can tell ya more. James may have wind experience too.

Doc, the little Cypher can handle more wind then you can. I have flown without a problem in 25 to 30 mph winds. There are issues with flying in the wind that you will not know until you do. Now, I did not say it is the best conditions to fly in, yet I just fly. If I waited for the wind to stop, I would fly about 10 minutes a month.

One thing you will notice is that the helicopter will go INTO the wind. It will also balloon up a lot. That is why you need idle up setup so you can put a little negative in the blades to bring it down. If your gyro is so-so, you will have problems.

I flew my Raptor 30 in winds that were gusting to about 45-50 mph. That was a little hairy. But you do not know if you can, if you don't try. I do NOT, I repeat I do NOT recommend you try that unless you are willing to pay the piper.

James, this is the batteries I was looking at.

Charger
http://www.hobbypartz.com/60p-dyc-1004.html

Tx Battery
http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/233832.asp

This is the Tx battery I have. You NEED!!!!!! to do a nice slow low current forming charge to get the most out of it. I setup my Tritton II charger to charge then dis-charge at the lowest rate it could do. Took almost a week to do 4 cycles. That battery now holds enough charge to last two days at the field.

I am down to (2) red label HC batteries and a single Impulse battery from Hobby People. So I need to order some 2200's for my helicopters. Not much stick time, kitchen is taking up most of my weekends.

James I wouldn't go any below 30c on the paks. For the small increase in price, it would really be worth it IMHO.

Default Cheap Packs

I have bought several cheap packs from China. Teased them and found most are not up to there rating. Still a good buy BUT buy a larger capacity and higher discharge rate. I found if it is rated at X-20 it will be good for X-15. If you draw more current then it can give the voltage goes way down. Doc in Potter PA.

James, I would love to fly with you. We could figure out a weekend and meet at the Choallas club, it is about 60 miles from my house and about the same for you. It is collage and hwy 94.

May not be able to go flying for a month or so. Still working on the house. I need some weekends. I have not flown in so long my radio has forgotten how to transmit.

Best help I can offer is to land on the skids. If you don't, you will break parts Those inverted landings cost a lot of money.

I would say a 20 C battery is pushing it. 25C at the lowest. I am not a super heavy duty user. I knwo a helicopter puts more strain on them then a plane does. You could get away with it in a plane, yet in a heli, may melt it.

Doc, I have used them up but my 20C batts were good for about 18c. Not bad. They did last a long time before they died. They went in 3 flights. The were full power, then a little loss, then nothing. I did get my money worth. I do agree that some of the lower cost batts were and are over rated. Yet if you read the fine print, some say 30C for 30 seconds or there about.

James those paks look like a good choice. I got two of the Turnigy 3000mah 30c paks for the Atom but haven't tried them yet.
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=9489

Here's the charger I think I'm gonna go with. It and a power supply can be had for under $200
http://www.progressiverc.com/index.p...emart&Itemid=1

Definitely take Dru up on his offer. It'll help allot I'm sure !!

Kevin check out this link. It's a nice Cypher review...
http://www.ronlund.com/Merchant2/mer...Code=CypherKit

I get Cypher parts from twp places...
http://www.ronlund.com/Merchant2/mer...de=CypherParts
and...
http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/163140.asp

You won't be sorry going with Cypher. Lots of good things about it...parts are readily available, easy to work on/repair, great to learn all aspects of setup, cheap to buy and parts are cheap too and great support on this thread !!

The sickness is spreading, we have our next victim. Kevin welcome to our insanity. I will never say the TREX is a bad choice. I just think there are others out there that are as good. It would be no fun if the only helicopter was the TREX. I have (2) TREX clones and they fly very well. Yet I usually grab the Cypher to fly first. It has cost me less to fix then the TREX.

Here is my TREX clone. She is a pretty girl and worth every penny I spent.

http://www.heliwarehouse.com/proddet...450DIABLOCOMBO

http://www.rc-tek.com/us_store/rct-4...mbo-p1772.html

Parts are easy to get.
http://www.ronlund.com/Merchant2/mer...de=CypherParts

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/163140.asp

I am getting blades from www.hobbypartz.com They are a good low cost blade. You can get 3 or 4 sets of the F/G blades for the cost of a single carbon blade from other stores.

The last time I went to the field, I was talking to a guy who was interested in getting a helicopter. We have a heli friendly club. He saw I had the Cypher and was asking questions about it. Some of the other people said to spend the big bucks and get a TREX. He did not want to spend the $1,000 to get one in the air. I did a demo flight with mine and he was impressed. I said I do not like to fly the same thing as every one else. He ended up getting a Cypher the next sale.

Cypher comes with motor, ESC and ARF helicopter for $120.00. Lucky to get the motor and ESC for a TREX for that price. At least the ones they recommend.

James, when you order the batteries, order the connectors too. Not sure if the battery comes with 3.5mm or 4.0mm connectors.

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...2810pcs/set%29

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...2810pcs/set%29

James, summer is almost here and I would enjoy flying with you. Just hope you like planes as well as helicopters. I usually bring 4 or 5 planes and a couple of helicopters to the field. I always get at least 6 flights, because I bring at least 6 aircraft
