Mine snapped off at the cap head as well. It seems to me the stock ones are way to brittle.

Are these FBL heads? If so, you don't need to crank down the Jesus bolt hard, just somewhat firmly. The two clamping bolts on the FBL head will take care of any slop.
On the flybarred head, the Jesus bolt is the clamping bolt, so you do need to get it pretty tight.

Mine wasn't cranked down either. I just snugged it up gently.

just finishing build of my new Atom 500.
jesus bolt broke when I checked it because I had some play around jesus bolt. lucky it was before maiden flight ... one main blade screw broke also during build. I could replace main blade screw with MSH ones I had in stock, for jesus bolt, don't know where to find solid one. MSH screws are bigger (3mm) and I do not want to buy compass ones (2.5 mm) for replacement. I don't trust these compass screws which are a matter of "life" for our helis ...

Nessie,
Was the bolt a fully threaded one? The one from my original head, and the one that came with my flybarless conversion, are solid with a few threads on the end.

flybar version, solid with a few threads at the end.
I am hesitating between : - getting T500 2.5x20 jesus bolt screws (and putting some loctite inside main axis to eliminate play), - or drilling head block to 3mm to put MSH (on similar) 3mm screws.

It was the solid one on the fbl head. I switched to Trex 500 2.5x18 mm fully threaded. Its not much play and this is just one of three bolts on the fbl head, I have no play in my head.

I was thinking of doing the drill-out myself. I have only 1 M2 6 X 18 screw that would go all the way through the head and have a lock-nut on the other side, but it's the one on the secondary gear Bird's been down almost a month because I can't justify a whole order to get one stinking bolt! Hopefully soon I'll just get bugged enough to order parts or modify it. The upside to going straight to the 3mm is that it will be much stronger than the 2mm, so just toying with the idea now.

ATOM 500 main gear assembly
Hey all, I just wanted to share a recent revelation that I had.
I've been enjoying my Atom 500, now converted to 5.5 since June of this year. What a great bird with GOBS of power, yet very robust. One thing I was never happy with was that my main gear always seemed warped when I would install the one-way hub. After a not so recent crash and a very recent re-build, I FINALLY figured out how to get my main gear to run true. It seems that the person I bought this heli from used, had installed the hub with the screws going through the hub and then into the main gear. I just assumed this was correct, but never got great results. I also noticed the screws went in tight into the main gear. After closer inspection 2 nights ago, I realized, man, I can thread the screws through the main gear first, as there is clearance between the main gear and the hub. As I was setting up to do so, I realized why my main gear always wanted to warp - the holes in the main gear didn't line up perfectly with the screw holes in the hub. So, to resolve this, I reamed the holes out a bit, slapped some loc-tite on the screws and put them through the main gear first and then into the hub. The results were pure PERFECTION. Now I have a main gear that doesn't rub my belt and doesn't rob any efficiency from my drive train. Upon closer inspection of the manual, I realized that this is how the main gear assembly is supposed to go together. Well, someones' silly mistake and my lack of attention to detail can hopefully save you the user in the end! |

Good catch Cullen! I noticed the same thing a long time ago when I had to swap out a main gear/drive gear and was confounded for a few minutes when re-assembling it. I had set the parts down and got some dinner but was scratching my head at it when I got back. I finally understood what needed to be done and it went right together. I never warped my gears, but looking back on it now I can see that happening if you did it backwards.

Hey guys, I recently got my hands on an Castle ICE 100 for my Atom 500. I was wondering what timing setting people have the best results with, rt now it's set to normal (5) and it seems okay. My NRG 6S 3000 are getting a bit warm after a 4min.+ flight, mostly sport flying. I didn't have this concern with my stock Hobbywing 60Amp ESC. Any suggestions on Castle ICE set up would be appreciated.
