blown board or tail motor
managed to pick up a used one of these to fill the gap between my nano and 230s i know they don't make them anymore but have wanted one for years and wanted something to practice my inverted flying in the garden as the 230 is a little to big
on its third flight i had a light crash but managed to hit throttle cut and there was no sign of any damage. when i tried to take off again i saw some smoke from under the canopy. i disconnected the battery as quick as i could but i think i may have fried somthing. nothing happening with the tail motor now apart from twitching when applying the rudder. i couldn't see anything obvious like the wires disconnected. cant believe my luck as i know these are meant to be tough little birds and it really was a nothing type of crash. gutted as i'm not sure i'll be able to get hold of a board if that's what's blown. any suggestions for diagnosing the problem appreciated. |

You're best and cheapest bet is to replace the tail motor first. You can pick one up for fairly cheap on eBay. If it turns out to be the board you can buy new or have it repaired by Megas Micros for half the cost.
I know your frustration as my first ever flight with the mcpx BL took a small hit and killed the receiver on the board. I have crashed it quite a few times since and never had an issue with the electronics other than a servo wire popping out a little. |

Someone here mentioned that he thinks the boards that were made most recently to when the mcpx bl was discontinued, were not a durable as the old ones.
I am starting to agree with that. This one board that was old and was having trouble starting the main motor, Horizon Hobbies replaced with a new board in 2014. Well, that newest board most recently won't start the main motor and me giving it a push/spin by hand doesn't work. So, I took it off and put on the old board that this one was supposed to fix. Works a lot better than the new one. If it has trouble starting the main motor once in a while, I can live with that. I remember crashing my BL into pavement inverted with such force that the main blade grips broke off and scattered. The main board was fine. I just recently bought a new board, just to have it around, and I am hoping it's the "old" hardware.

i'm Uk based so don't think your suggestion will work for me unfortunately.
funny thing is the same thing happened on my 230 and i couldn't figure out if the board or tail motor were at fault. i didn't want to damage a new esc so changed both just in case cant believe the same thing has happened again and might have to consider doing the same. makes sense to buy the motor first though so much for grabbing a cheap heli for practice lol cheers for the input only got a couple of flights in before this happened checking everything was set up ok and only managed some tail in and nose in hovers and a couple of slow circuits before it packed up and was really impressed with the power compared to my brushless nano. i nearly got one a while ago but decided on the 230 instead which is a great heli but still a bit scary to fly and normally breaks something in a crash. |

Since the smoke came from inside the canopy I would guess it was the board but you never know.
The cheapest/easiest thing to try would be the tail motor wire harness which causes issues just as often as the board or tail motor. Especially once you go to a solid tailboom so they're exposed. That's the first thing I would check since they only have a laquor coating instead of insulation so they can get damaged and short out on each other really easy. It's not even the boards made after they were discontinued that don't seem as good. Sometime in 2015 or so I believe Blade changed factories/manufacturers or something. My first nano cpx took horrendous abuse for months in freezing temps and crashing on pavement all day. Second nano cpx and my bl had board/ect failures and twitchy servos no amount of cleaning could cure in one month with a handful of crashes in grass when it was 70°F Plastic seemed slot more brittle as well. Way more issues in a fraction of the time and abuse. Nano 1 vs nano 2 was like night and day.

It has got a solid tail boom fitted and i did wonder about the wires as they look bare and i didn't realise they were coated.
Im thinking that the board is most likely toast considering it was smoking however after reading post replies i've realised the cause may have something to do with the tail harness. I thought they looked a little untidy just before the final flight and wrapped them around the canopy pin to shorten a little and neaten everything up. It flew fine until i crashed but maybe it was enough to make the wires touch if the coating got damaged. At least i can factor this in now as i didnt consider it before and you may have just saved me from frying another board. I really want to get her back in the air again ASAP but have decided that for the price of a new board and potentially a tail motor or new solid tail boom i might as well bid on another heli on ebay when a good one comes up and get a complete one for the same cost as the repairs. Means i will have to be a bit more patient and was close to saying screw it and pressing pay now with a motor and board online. I will then have to explain to the wife why buying another heli is a good idea when she couldn't understand why i needed the last one lol. |
