Main Shaft bearings
I need to replace my main shaft bearings, and have decided to spend the extra money to get the good ones. At Bocabearings.com, I've found these 2 guys:
http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-...SMR105CYZZ5NB2 and http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-...-SMR105CYZZAF2 They are both Stainless Steel 440C bearings with Ceramic SI3N4 balls. The only difference is the price, and ABEC rating: ABEC-1 ($7.95) vs ABEC-5 ($9.95). What should I get? Or should I go with something entirely different? |

If its only a choice between ABEC 1 and ABEC 5, then definitely ABEC 5.
Now how often do you crash? I'm no expert, but I've heard ceramics dont do well in crashes. Maybe split the difference and go ABEC-3 ? That way you get smoother bearings and some measure of crash resistance. http://helidirect.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=5x10x4&x=0&y=0 You probably already know this but ignore the ones that say thrust bearings and the B400 needs 3 bearings on the main shaft. And if you want to stick with Bocabearings: http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-inventory/Radial-Bearings/2347/5x10x4-SMR105ZZ5 http://www.bocabearings.com/bearing-inventory/Radial-Bearings/2338/5x10x4-SMR105ZZ7 Both of those are all metal, and holy smokes that second one links to some ABEC-7s. You might want to email/call them to confirm. Also I'm wondering if such tight tolerances will lead to extra drag. |

Actually, no extra drag. Just smoother action with less shaft wag is how abec 5 and 7 toleranced bearings work if the mainshaft bearing races are lined up properly.
However I would try these first at ebay if you are looking for some cheap but decent ceramics. None I tested were under abec5. 10 of them for less than $6 shipped is insane. http://www.ebay.com/itm/10x-Premium-...item2c67b22a2b

unless your a hardcore 3d'er and even then i doubt you would see a diff .. i wouldnt waste the money on Ceramics .. i use to run them in my brushless motors and in the end .. not a big diff wasnt worth the bs ..
