First Idle-Up , batt got very warm
Hi all,
Just used my idle-up switch for the first time today on my last break, just hovered around for my usual 5 min timer, and when I brought it in andpulled the batt it was very warm. I am flying a blade 400 with an align 450L motor with 11t pinion gear (stock one is 10t), stock blade 400 25Aesc, with a 1800mah batt. My cutout never kicked in, so my question is why did my battery get so warm? Should I shorten my flight time to 4 mins in idle up instead of the 5 (with 5 I get FF, and lots of flying around with no batt cutout and no warm batt) I have been doing in normal mode, or is there something else I should be looking for? I have no binding and smooth head rotation, main gear/pinion not to tight, belt-tension not to tight. BTW Loved idle-up mode will be flying in it much more often, made heli a lot more stable in the wind than it had been. Regards, Will R. Everett, WA. |

heck I dont know.
but did you hit idle up on the ground or when you were hovering ? I'm not that ready for idle up yet. |

I set pitch up so that at 50% in normal mode I have almost no lift, and idle up 50% is set for same. So I spun up to 50% on the ground, flipped the switch then took off and hovered to get the feel for it.

An 1800 mAh battery with a 11t pinion will pull a fair amount of current. You might want to back down to a 10t or even 9t pinion. I went to the 9t with a stock ESC, and use 2200 mAh Kong Power 25C LiPos, and can run idle up (100% flat curve) for 7 minutes with minimal battery heating. I stepped from the 10t because I wanted longer flight times.

I don't have a hold switch on my controller, I am using TX/RX from a belt-cp(FM) . Does anyone know where to get a 10t & 9t pinion for an align 450L motor? My LOHS didn't have any.
Until I get a smaller pinion, I will have to run normal mode on my 1800mah, and will use my 2200mah bats for idleup mode. about 10 mins ago I destroyed both the main blades and tail blades (everthing else looks perfect still), but turns out was a lucky thing . While I was looking for damage to the rest of the heli, I noticed that my blade grips had come very loose...they could have comeoff in flight with the idle-up sw on (it was on for my 2nd time) . What caused my minor crash? Glad you asked... I landed in gravel, had a tail stike and took back off....with what I after the fact find out was only half lengthof each tail blade , so had horrible tail athority while in idle up mode, saw the crash coming and lowered collective negative pitchput it right to the ground and patio blocks but no blade strike as the down pressure was keeping it held almost tipped over....I turned off idle sw, and without the down pressure to hold it the heli tipped further with main blades kissing the patio blocks. |

The higher headspeed, and the more you load the motor (pitch), the more current you will pull out of the battery. As you do this the battery will naturally heat up more, especially if running closer to it's discharge "C" rating.
The higher the C rating the more current you'll be able to suck out with less heat generated. My 2200 25Cs still get a little warm in idle up, but not that much. Blade~400~er ran his 2100 30-40C Zippys and they were cool to the touch. My 1800 stock gets mighty toasty!!
