Default Synergy 766 Build and Review - On Going Discussion Thread

Hello Synergy Folks,

I just wanted to post a build thread on this bird. I have already completed and flown this heli in the last 24 hrs, I want to share the experience.

I will start off and explain "why" I purchased this heli in reasons.

1. I saw it live and IRCHA, and couldn't believe the autos.
2. I bought a pair of Rail blades right before IRCHA and it changed by G500 for the much better.
3. Watched Botos auto dismount videos, seems like a good dude, his machines seem to auto amaziing.
4. Its big, but seems to "lack compromise" for its size.. so I said WHY not?
5. I have an addiction.. to buying nice helis.

So here weee goo...

Setup:
KDE 535
YGE 160
BK Servos
Vortex VX1e
Pulse 65C - 5000mah 6s x 2
Western Robotic 20a BEC
JR DMSS XG14 goodness

Traveled to Texas to pick it up.. it got in too late to start as it was 1 a.m.

Next morning 8 a.m.

This blades are both fat and longer.. also heavier.

766 blades - 247 grams each - exactly. Rail 696's are 188. Cyclones 715's were 185

I started off an followed Christopher Sexton's YouTube advice to start with the transmission due to the green loctite need. I also was in a hurry to build this for an event only 24 hrs from when I started. So I took it.

Transmission was just a little notchy on one spot of the bevel gear.. I couldnt get it out so moved on.

Frame done - its pretty beefy, quite a few parts, I am learning its not a "low parts heli" but looking nice.

Main gear assembled... I almost screwed up on put Tri Flow grease on my 1-way bearing.. I read the manual it said bearing oil ONLY. So I fixed her. Its huge to say the least, a very very nice piece.

Gears installed - just needed that one shim on-top the bottom bearing block, zero slop. Motor installed as well.. I thought for a minute I didnt get the side plates for the motor but... I looked harder and found the hiding in a box still. Whew. (photo doesn't show it - added after)

Swash plate taken apart and reassembled with loctite. Another very nice piece of hardware.

Head was up next, took apart, greased and complete reassembled. Wow I keep getting impressed by the quality, this is my 3rd 700, but wow its nice.

I did a littleG700c versus S766 head comparison.. yes its larger. Yes I like the finish better.

Lunch break.. wife brought me back some nice treats. Chick Fil a Spicy Sammich and some Pittsburgh Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Popcorn with a ice cold Sierra Nevada Pale Ale to wash it all down. You cant build S766's without delicious energy.

Back at it, its time for the tail. This thing is very beefy.

The tail was super smooth out of the box, I did keep the shim per the manual but wow very smooth.

Got the tail installed now, and pre-drilled and screwed together.. Tail has lots of parts. I am a belt guy, my only concern is man there is a ton of crap to mess up in a crash versus 1 band snapping and a boom. however! the shaft is super smooth.

After this I got serious mounting the electronics, this is my LEASET favorite part of the build. It was a bit easier since I stole everything from my now gutted Protos V2.. but the routing was a bit of a pain. I had to drill 2 small holes for zip ties.

Any there she is.. at this point it was getting late, and I was getting tired.

Comparison to my other love - the G700c with Cyclone 715's.

Someone told me this thing was heavy.. I beg to differ in 766 form, I was pleased.

So Today... was the event, about every 3 to 4 months my club ventures out to the Desert, its an old ancient dry lake bed and there is more space than required to fly really anything. Its flat as hell, its bright as hell, and it can be hot as hell, however it makes for a very very nice place to fly.

Enjoy:

So yes it was a great day. She has 7 flights under her belt right now. I have just been playing around at 1600 and it has a much bite as my G700c does at 1800 here, however.. it has more float. This heli can almost stop time, I cannot believe the float.. did I mention the autos yet? My first one I could barely hear the blades and promptly set her down.. only later to realize that's normal, and there still is a lot of lift left..

Then there is the presence in the air.. and on the ground. My club typically looks at my helis for a few minutes then go about playing with their planks, but today was different, many of them stood staring and photographing and filming this beast. In addition to a ton of questions which once again normally is not normal. The S766 is very very elegant, and photos don't due it justice.

Hats off to Mr. Botos and this s766 beast, shes a keeper for sure. My only complaint is it didn't come with a freaking blade holder and the battery tray leaves something to be desired.. but I am working on a fix for that.

Anywho Fly on, I will keep this thread updated as I fly. I'd like to see more s766 action, there certainly needs to be, I know I cannot wait till next weekend to stretch her legs some more.

Saludos.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Glad to hear you love the autos! This thing autos like a nitro and I love that!

Curious why people assumed it would be heavy? Mine with 14s packs is less than 13.5 pounds. Not only are the blades longer but the head bolt to bolt is almost 20mm wider than a standard 700 class head. The disc loading is stupid nice!

What don't you like about the tray? I personally would rather the handle to release was a bit longer but that's an easy fix. Other than that the tray has been great for me.

On the weight, I was just telling my buddy about the disc loading and I agree, its both the head width AND the additional length of the blades. Its really closer to a 800 machine that weights what heavier 700's weight.. so yeah that makes it pretty sweet in my book.

At 1600 it feels lighter than my G700c at 1800.

I need to work on how I flare my autos with it, it does lose forward momentum quicker as that large disc can just stop it. That will come with more practice, but the way it can just hover, and hover, and hover after flaring is impressive.

What I don't like about the tray is its built IMO for a 12s stick pack, not for 2 6s packs with standard length leads. I am ordering supplies to fix that now to extend the wires to the front of the pack, then heat shrink the pack so the cables don't rub on the frame rails when sliding it in. They will then become dedicated to the s766.

I lost the finger thing on my first flight, didn't realize it was screwed in and didnt add loctite.. so I found another bolt to put in it that had a shoulder to bottom out on the OD of the pin before hitting the other side of the ID in the barrel and red loctited it.

I will buy a second tray, swapping packs at least for me is a pain in the ass. I like 2 x packs for helis so I can get more flights.

Once I put some more time in the battery tray factory it will be fine.

After that I really don't have anything negative to say about this machine, so far so good.

Here is a video from today.. I cannot wait for next weekend.

Sure thing. It's very quite mid stick then creeps up towards the collective edges.

I will play with headspeeds this weekend. Watching Botos fly this at 1950 it just looked ballistic. Most likely I will stay around 1600 to 1800 for normal flights. The one in the video I landed around 4:30 on the timer and only 50% pack usage. I like ~5 min flights.

Thanks for the comments I cannot wait to stretch her legs more when there is less air traffic than today.

Time is valuable so nope, none wasted.

I got the extra battery tray ordered and heat shrink. I also got some balance lead squib extenders so I will work on making 2 sets of packs for smooth install and use-age once they arrive. I will also have to lengthen the EC5 connector for the back pack. Once that's complete I think I will be fully satisfied.

I'll post pics once I get the supplies to do this.

Well, quick update. I extended my 1 battery lead with a EC5 extender, I arranged the pack so it slides in nice and easy into the 766, and made it out to the field today.

Overall it was a great day, here is a short video showing this things auto ability. Its unreal the float it has at super low head speed. I do some long stretch autos that my last 700 would have crashed half way through. I had a lot of laughter today flying this thing.

Synergy 766 Auto Rotation Monster - 3-4-16 (4 min 15 sec)

Unfortuneatly the day was not without incident.. was on my last pack, which makes it number 12 for the 766, was about 3 minutes into my flight doing piro flips, I was concentrating in the zone, had them looking almost like morph balls straight out of Metroid when BAM! I did a flip into inverted, and the tail just let go like a tornado while inverted.. I was about 25 ft up, hit throttle hold, half piro flipped out of it upright, autoed down, flared right above the desert ground.. almost made it back to the runway, missed by about 4 ft... ran out of head speed.. heli landed between two desert bushes on its skids.. I ran over as it nearly disappeared from sight and found it.. well pretty much unscathed..

Here was the issue:

The ball for the tail pitch control backed out... Rail tail blades are screwed, but that was the extent.

I already have my spare set of Cyclones tails on her, shes ready for more fun tomorrow

I cannot stress enough, piro practice piro practice piro practice.. when a failure like this happens it happens so freaking fast, its unreal how the habit forming control can just take over and in some cases save you some cash preventing a bad crash.

Thank you, I want to do invert autos.. I know I can do invert autos, I just am too chicken shit still.. I want grass to fly over so if I f up my heli wont be all scratched.. lol in time. I think my 766 had more time without the throttle today than with.

The hang time on the 766 is unreal, I figured out the flaring on it today so I didnt kill the forward speed, it doesnt need much, this bird rocks!

So I got to fly the 766 quite a bit over the weekend. I started flying her more aggressive and noticed I was having tail blow out issues in hard collective maneuvers. A simple one for example is hard collective pogo, at the base I could get the tail to kick sometimes up to 90 degrees.

So I played with gov gains, tail gyro gains but couldn't rid it. It to me at least seemed like the YGE had a tough time keeping up.

So I decided it was time to try Spartan E-gov on it, this I have been putting off on all my machines but... I did it. WOW, it literally is like a new - new heli.

It is so locked in, its unreal.

Video below running 1500 then 1650 then 1800. At 1800 is everybit as fast as my G700c @ 2100. I'm in love.

Synergy 766 - Spartan Vortex VX1e -egov - 3-7-16 - awesomeness (4 min 59 sec)
