Default Only 800 class still?

Over the last several years we've seen the natural progression for ever-larger heli's from the manufacturers. 600's to 700's to 800's, seems they produce what sells. But yet, it seems the growth has stopped at the 800 mark. Yes, I know an individual CAN build larger if one so desires, but I'm wondering why something larger hasn't come to market yet. I'm not talking for 3D or heavy acro, but larger has some advantages ie: easier to see, more stable, more realistic sounds and appearance. Anyone have any ideas?

I believe companies will build what sells. 800's are not the top selling in the market at this point so why make something bigger. The bigger you go the more expensive it will get and the smaller the market will get.

Just my 2 cents

There is nothing in the air like the Velos.

Have a look at vario. They sell some large trainers that can then be easily put into their fuselages

Best bet now if you want a heli larger than 800 is to stretch a Synergy 766. The mechanics and gears are all way overbuilt and much bigger than a 700. The TT bevel gears are as big as the palm of your hand and the head is huge compared to 700). Just need to get a CF boom of the right diameter and an 8x0.45x1000mm section of K&S 6061 T6 tubing to make a longer TT with. The splines are of the "pin and collar" type so you can easily drill holes for the TT ends in the 8mm tube.

Get very big and you start hitting legislation hassles. The rules vary country to country but in Europe I think the limit before you need airworthiness exemption certification is 20Kg and in the US I think the limit is 55lb.

As weight increased (as a general rule) to the cube of rotor size then you would expect to hit that limit typically if you went much over 1100mm blades.

That does leave quite a bit of room for growth from the current 800 size but some clubs have lower limits. At the end of the day it also comes down to what there is a market for. I'm guessing Velos discontinued the 880 because they werent selling well enough.

Not the only game in town....

ALIGN 700 can easily go to 900 and 1000.

K-Frame 700 ( using ALIGN hardware ) is also easily extended to 900 and 1000

Also a K-frame 600 (using ALIGN 600 hardware can also easily go to 1000.

Only limits are what you impose.

It can but a Synergy 766 wouldn't look as out of proportion with the larger head and frame.

All the years I've been flying them, I hadn't noticed.
Especially once in the air.

those extreme stretch jobs are interesting but I think are missing the point a bit. They aren't really 'bigger helis' they are 700 helis fitted with bigger blades. There is a difference, like an average guy wearing stilts isn't the same thing as a giant, even though height might be the same.

Fair enough....
But a few things to consider..
At the time, there was nothing readily available above a 700 class.
So breaching 800 - 1000 with what was available was the only choice.

Second, I never really understood the concept of bigger.
I do see where some do not care for the proportions, but why add extra weight (bigger) when it isn't required.
I have a 1000 that comes in AUW at 14 lbs. (6.35kG) and manages 35 - 45 minute flights.
Can snatch up a 30 lb lead weight with little effort.
Bigger (heavier) would reduce that.
Everyone is free to explore the different venues this hobby offers and the fun of it is that there is no stead fast rule book your required to adhere to.
JMHO.
Not to mention the added advantage when installing in a fuse.
The extra room is a added welcome.

Sorry, i didnt mean to be dismissive of your helis. Like you said these lightweight very low disk loading helis will far outperform conventional 3D type helis in flight time and aerodynamic efficiency. I'm guessing though that in terms of agility and 3D flight there will be trade-offs. So it all depends what you are looking for.

Never took it that way.. no worries.
As I said, what I've done was due to the fact that the mechanics were not available at that time so you cobbled together the best that was.
