Gaui X2 mods and tips
Here is a compiled list of mods and tips for the X2
I will try to make this as complete as possible and accurate (if i miss anything i can add it and make changes to any errors, im just starting this now will finish in a few days) removing top head button remove the button on top of the head block, it can cause extra damage in a crash mainly just for looks Removing bolt from one side of feathering shaft If you need to remove the other bolt from the feathering shaft, I use an extra main gear with one way bearing to hold the feathering shaft while turning out the bolt. Feathering shaft and main shaft are the same diameter. The main gear/one way are also bonus spares in case of a one way failure. Oneway bearing tips Pay close attention to the one way bearing after a crash that involves smacking the main blades hard - especially an under power crash. When you pull the main gear, check the needle bearings and see if any don't look right. The one way is a bit fragile. If after repairs, the heli seems like it has less power or it seems to be slipping in pitch pumps, check over the one way. Grab the main gear and attempt to turn it against the way it should not slip. Spin the one way a couple time and repeat the grab to make sure it consistently grabs the main shaft. better, strong head links 10mm or 12mm only(3.5mm ball size) http://www.cnchelicopter.com/servlet...lade-CP/Detail Blades other than stock. Inculding me. tail boom supports If you happen to get a x2 with plastic boom support ends , change them to cnc ends asap. The plastic ones break very easy and are eaten instantly by thread lock. They will disintegrate fahtml http://www.empirerc.com/gaui-x2-form...set-p-7797.htm The new X2 formula boom supports with cnc ends are great. Alternative are ones from cnc helicopter, cheap and bulletproof. Solid pf carbon rods with cnc ends. http://www.cnchelicopter.com/servlet...NC-Belt/Detail List of servos , cyclic and tail Other than supplied with kit, metal gears recommended Hyperion ds-11 amb , tight but good fit(my setup) Savox SH-0262MG Super Speed Metal Gear Micro Digital Servo-savsh0262mg Mks ds-95 tail Servos MKS DS-95i, this is arguably the best servo for the X2( i use this, cured alot of tail issues i had) / / Alternative esc's to stock Castle 25 , BEC handles most servos with ds95i tail( I use this with gov works great) Talon 25 YGE 18 Electronic Speed Controller YEP 18A (2~4S) SBEC o-ring on front guide pulley using a stock damper or oring place on bottom side of pulley, it is easier to remover the pulley first. this helps move the belt up and away from the main red gear taller bearing on top bearing block On the top main bearing block use a 3x6x2.5 bearing instead of the stock 3x6x2. Then use the short main shaft collar to retain it. This lasts longer and can take more deflection than the stock bearing stronger or alternative skids Trex 250 plastic skids, just drill holes to match the the x2 skid mounts White trex 250 skids Reinforce the cf X2 skids with a peice of carbon or like the pic aluminum. Place on top of the skids then bolt in. Makes them stronger but they still give in a bad crash. harder dampers or alternative dampers These are the gaui 200 90 hardness dampers, direct drop in no mod needed. Trex 250 dampers, these do need a slight mod and are kind of hard to install. What i did was remove one of the spacers on each side which allowed the grips to fit nice and tight with out any binding(flight report soon). So instead of 2pcs of 3.1x4.6x1 per side i used 1 per side. removing sheared tiny jesus bolt/screw This happens in crashes or overtightening(mods listed for larger screws below) To remove a sheared off jesus screw find a similar bolt or paperclip and carefully solder to any exposed portion of the screw. Kind of difficult, but possible and will save you $$ Use a longer bolt so that if it shears, you can grab the part sticking out with a pliers and move it out the other side. Tail case tips W2x3.5x1 is not needed,,set tail endpoints in fbl unit to prevent slider from hitting tail case Loctite bearings in place(becareful not to get inside bearings) Use cone/finish washer instead of w1.4x2.5x0.4 to hold bearing in place tail case idler pulley Mod (advanced) a mod that has been done by a few fellow X2 owners and myself. I really like the mod, it works good and helps the belt last a long time. Main reason is to prevent belt slippage and lower belt tension. Link to full thread, please note*** the 13mm dimension has been changed to 14mm*** Please read thru the thread there is alot of good info there https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=509894 IF YOU MESS UP THE TAIL CASE PULLEY HOLES, IT CAN STILL BE USED STOCK, Trex DFC mod This mod removes the 2 swash guides and uses trex 250 dfc arms. FBL mounting locations Side mount "if" your fbl unit allows this orientation Middle plate (watch for vibes) i run mine here. To reduce vibes in this spot hotglue the bottom plate to the side plates in the middle of the skid mounts or use 3m 3011 clear or gray to make it more rigid. Sheared head bolt remedies
In the previous thread I asked about shearing the head bolt off, two suggestions came out of it. 1 - Use a longer bolt so that if it shears, you can grab the part sticking out with a pliers and move it out the other side. 2 - Solder a paperclip to the bolt and then as soon as it cools enough too harden, gently back it out of the hole.

I'd also suggest:
FBL mounting locations - careful on the bottom tray and don't put it out on the diving board at the front of the bottom tray. Best results are to mount it on the side of the frame. Better tail fin - 300X Lynx fin is an easy mod and a better alternative to the weak stock (from another thread). Tail case - Use a sparring of blue loctite to hold tail case bearings in place. I also use an extra cone washer (used on the frame) on the back to extra lock in the large bearings. The cone washer is the perfect size. It fully covers the outer race, but doesn't hit the inner race or shield. Somewhere someone also posted an upgrade (thicker) to the head links. After a crash, check the stock links cracks (and the swash arm links). Upgraded tail gears - HSC I'd also suggest ditching the head button. I haven't snapped a ball off the main blade grip after removing mine. That may or may not be coincidence - too small sample size. However, I have seen mentions of others have trashing grips on head buttons (different model helis). IMHO, its fugly and serves no function on this bird. Maybe also list the battery ranges for this heli. That seems to get asked a bunch. The smallest I'd go is 850mah. And the largest I'd go are around 1300 packs (my 1300 mah Glaciers are as big as I can fit under the stock cano). If you need to remove the other bolt from the feathering shaft, I use an extra main gear with one way bearing to hold the feathering shaft while turning out the bolt. Feathering shaft and main shaft are the same diameter. The main gear/one way are also bonus spares in case of a one way failure. Pay close attention to the one way bearing after a crash that involves smacking the main blades hard - especially an under power crash. |

On the landing gear, I've doubled up the stock ones with great success. I read it on here somewhere. I auto down from about a foot or 2 up and sometimes land hard to cement. No issues breaking the skids when doubled up, and they look better than align skids, and I really don't want anything Align on my X2 .

I think I'm the one who probably mentioned the doubled up gear. After I cracked my first set of gear, I added metal tabs on the outside. That greatly improved the strength. But, over time, they would start to crack just past the tab. At that point, I've switched to doubled up landing gear. Like you, I didn't want to stick on align parts -- my Trex 250 gear is still sitting in the parts box.
Heck, even some of the early Formula X2 spy shots I saw had doubled up landing gear. Nice work Gaui |

+1 on removing the headbutton. I have never flown with mine and after a few mishaps can say that I have never needed to replace my main blade grips. Even the new Trex 450L kits which have the same DFC head as the previous 450 do not include the headbutton I am guessing for this very same reason. On this small of a heli, the blades spool down fairly quickly so no need to have one to place your hand on to slow down the blades.
Ive added 250 dampeners and modded them to fit. This makes a huge differnce over the stock dampeners. Until guai releases some stiffer options, the T250 dampeners are pretty solid IMO. Now only if we had some other blade options Troy

LANDING SKIDS:
Like someone else has already noted, I took two sets of skids and CA'd them together which has at least doubled the strength. I've crashed the model and the skid have survived. |

Fusions, instead of trying to fit the tail case mod in this thread, just put in the link to the existing thread.
