Default Unofficial Vortex setup guide

Hi folks,

This is a little project I've been working on for a while, and it's at the stage I'd like to get some feedback from everybody here.

The idea is to create a guide so total beginners to the Vortex can work through this from start to finish, and literally take them from having never seen a Vortex before to have it flying great.

I know everything is covered on the Spartan website, but I'm trying to bring it all in one place, so covering:
- Firmware updates
- What's needed for the setup
- Initial setup
- Maiden flight
- Tuning main, tail and governor gains
- Tweaking the 'feel' in the air

If you have a few minutes could I ask you to take a read and let me know if you spot anything that could be improved.

Myxiplx's unofficial Spartan Vortex setup guide

Cheers all :-)

Myx

I am really wondering if your flying for Spartan myxiplx. Your posts are always nice and accurate when it comes to the Vortex. Thanks for taking the time to write this, I am sure it will help lots of people including myself

PS: Let's make this a sticky to help new people find this easier.

Nah, I'm just a geek who loves the challenge of learning things and likes helping people (trust me, after 20 years in the IT industry, this is much more fun). And as much as anything, this is how I learn.

Plus I'm just ever so slightly addicted to RC Helicopters :-)

Well that's perfect timing for me. If you do use the guide please let me know if you have any problems or spot anything I missed, or anything that's unclear.

Great job!
A recap of the Trim Flight parameters and adjustment procedures could be helpful prior to basic flight characteristics.

Wow, awesome there bud! I Myself struggled with the VX1e to try and understand the unit and the wiring. This is my first Vortex and looks like I was just a day late and a dollar short on this guide. LOl

I think what may help the new guys is a detailed guide to the wiring of the unit showing different receivers that clearly outline the connections. The diagrams for receiver setup had me all messed up and Sutty helped me sort all my issues out.

It would be very helpful to show the supplied leads that come with the different units along with an explanation of where they go and what they do. After you realize what is going on and how the unit works is when you say to yourself boy that was stupid of me. It just looks confusing to me anyway.

My hats off to all you guys for your help!

Yeah, I was thinking about you while I was writing this, and wondering how to do that. In the end I couldn't come up with a way to show it that wasn't going to get horribly messy.

I think the key thing with the Vortex is not to over-think things or worry about the wiring. Honestly if you just blindly follow the instructions in the setup wizard it might be confusing at first, but should make sense by the end :-)

The simplest and clearest idea I could come up with was just to emphasise that you start off the setup with no wires connected at all because that really is something that a lot of people don't expect.

Very well written. Your work on this is very much appreciated! The two supplied "sat" cables and there functions had me scratching my head and I was unsure where the lead with the three single wires plugged into the vortex unit. After speaking with Sutty did I realize that that cable went into AUX3 lower left port on the vortex unit. After that it all made sense to me for final setup.

Thank you for this great guide!

Unfortunately I'm English, which means I'm utterly useless at speaking any other language, and this is only a little project of mine, the maintenance overhead of multiple language copies would be a nightmare.

I suspect Google translate would do a reasonable job with this though if you wanted to try that.

Hi everybody,

I've updated the guide to include v4 firmware and have started adding the new Vortex VX1p Pico (although I need to wait for the official docs for that).

Please let me know if you spot any mistakes, or can think of anything else I should add here.

Myx
