These guys sure don't need canopies.. even at dusk. My favorite dusk flight from IRCHA a few years back. I didn't take the video, just saved it.

Tim Jones crashed at IRCHA 2012 with Andrew Merlino (5 min 16 sec)

I've never flown my X3 with a canopy. I bought it 2nd hand and the canopy that came with is so beautiful I hate to see it ever get trashed plus its a real tight fit. The holes could actually go back a half inch for a nice fit but I don't want extra holes in it so I just fly without it

It may actually help backwards flight as a canopy is almost like a parachute.

I forgot the canopy once, and I found it to be a much better experience.

The heli looked cooler, for one, and the reduced weight was a nice touch. Also, I didn't have to awkwardly crouch till it initialised and then fight the canopy on (with the bigger lipos) whilst the heli was level as possible so spirit had a 'zero' for bailout.

I did have to concentrated more so I didn't lose orientation though.

I consider the canopy as an aesthetical element. Always on as a question of etiquette

I always crash when I fly naked so I stopped doing that. Plus I was upsetting other flyers at the field. Lol

Some like it while others do not. For demo flights and videos I prefer people pit a canopy on or it simply looks creapy to me and a bit out of place. Otherwise I sugg st manufacturers better start selling without canopies.

Default Watch the length of your batery/esc leads

Watch the length of your batery/esc leads. The canopy prevents them from flopping around alot in certain manuvers with alot of pitch changes say tic tocs or similar. If your using an EC5 that isn't tight but maybe just supper snug you stand a chance at disconnecting in mid flight.

We have a couple people that don't fly with canopies in our club. Personal preference like wearing neck straps.

I seldom fly a canopy. Like the guy above said on the x3 backward flight with a canopy sucks. My n5c canopy is hard to put on so I don't. I always fly the canopy on my Nx4 because I add oil to the fuel and if I don't put a canopy on its as wet an oil rag after a few flights due to compression on the 37. My Logo400 needs a canopy or it's really hard to see since it's all black including servos, esc, frame boom....

The other day I was thinking next time I build one I will put the colored vinyl I use on the tail fin on the outside of the frames for that reason.

I used to fly without for a couple years. For one my connection for the Spartan Vortex controller was easier to access. Then it was a weight thing. Some 700/800 canopies weigh 150-200 grams. Plus some helis frame lines just look awesome to me. You get used to it. You just need to be one with the heli. Sometimes I will not know the exact orientation yet can fly through it knowing what it was doing and where it will go.

Just weighed my goblin 700c canopy and its at 250g. That's over half a pound!

I prefer flying with canopy but at the end it dies not matter. When I had the prototype for testing I always left the canopy off. On expensive machines I keep canopy off during a maiden flight or after major changes on the setup.

Otherwise it looks more cool with canopy on. (anyone walking by and see us flying likes the look better with canopy).

Only have 1 hell that holds the lipo up in the belly. Rest have it up front and on top and also have the esc up front. Always use a canopy on those to protect the esc and mainly the lipo since damaging either one can result in a meltdown/total loss.

Rather kill a cano you can fix with tape and glue than buy a new lipo and possibly a new everything

Could be my affliction as well. So far never maidened topless. Even my CF canopies stay on. I'm always thinking to myself that I'm going to remove the canopy but never remember once on the flight line.
