As a reference for your slimming activities: I'm running 4.86kg minus lipo's. I quote my weight as the setup seems similar to yours. Original Edge blades and HK5035, MKS HBL950, 980 servos, Kosmik Kool 200, HC3SX, R7003.

Wow.. that is a heavy heli for sure! As a comparison, my Goblin 770 (minus LiPo) is 4Kg and my Trex 700X is 3.7Kg. I wonder how Mikado managed to make it quite so heavy?

Everything in this heli is, how should I put it? Sturdy if not stout!
It makes the 700 Xxtreme look diminutive

Default Frame sides

Starting out with new Frame sides. My scale has them at 345grams/12.17oz for both. Should be interesting to see what I can drop there.

It will be interesting to see if you can save anything of significance.

FWIW and as a point of reference, a 5mm hole in 2mm carbon laminate will save 0.06g.. So if you drilled 100 such holes you would save a grand total of 6g

If only helis were made of lead, then drilling holes could save a lot of weight

Completely understand what your saying. My thoughts are every little bit adds up in the end. I know it's a lot of work for little reward but if nothing else it keeps the 800 section active.

Some weight savings I'd think could be done.

I wonder how the parts from the new 70 would influence ?

700 tailbox as compared to the XX metal one

Boom fin assembly - you'd save something here I think. Also would work better also

Fit a 700 head , or even the new 700 head would save a lot.

With a few new holes in side frame you could go to the new 700 maingear (I'd weight the difference first as it would be a lot of work)

The front bevel gear plate could use some holes in it.

titanium hardware ?

Aside from the obvious - motor / esc / bec / wire trimming / and biggie - packs

Should be a good project. Will be interested to see the outcome.
I love my 800 on the disk , weight didn't cross my mind , now the 700XX ......

Martin

Step one. I rounded the angles on the outside of the frames. Really noticeable on the rear. Holes and rounding edges next.

Looks like there is scope for removing some reasonable amounts of carbon from the frames. obviously bigger holes reduce weight by a lot more than small ones, a single 25mm hole in 2mm carbon would knock off a whole 1.6g (still not an awful lot to be honest but equivalent to 26 5mm holes!)

Have fun drilling

That's where I'm not sure about. In an area where multiple holes can be done. More smaller ones or a few bigger ones

A few big ones will usually save more weight, for example one 30mm hole saves as much as 36 5mm holes, but we are still talking only of an odd few grams.

FWIW I used to do 'freeflight' modelling where everyone is a 'weight weanie', counting every fraction of a gram. But even in that weight obsessed branch of the flying hobby, randomly drilled of holes were sometimes laughingly referred to as 'weakening holes' rather than 'lightening holes', because the only significant effect they had was removing strength
