Question Best way to measure speed

Hello

We are looking for a good way to measure speed of our speed heli's

I've a TDR 2 and my best friend has a Diabolo S, we want to make a battle of it so we want to have or the same gps or a extern option to measure speed that we realy have a accurate measuring. that we can compare the heli's together. and each of our skils :-)

whats the best way to do this these days ?

I fly Futaba he fly Graupner

Best regards Joeri

Most accurate GPS device is the PowerBox GPS II

My TDR2 has the GF canopy and I have the unit stuck to the top of the tail servo.

Then run your log files through the Speed Heli Pass Analyzer developed by Tomy!

I think that will depend on which Futaba or Graupner TX you both have, though the unit supports Futaba FASSTest and Graupner/SJ HoTT.

I use Jeti and it's just plug and play. The sensor connects to the receiver and the information is available on the TX.

Okay thanks for the info!

It's a Futaba 18sz
And a Graupner Mz 24

So that means it's possible, but we can also put it directly to the telemetry port.

Best regards Joeri

Even the Powerbox GPS suffers inaccuracies inherent to the low cost and slow update rate of our model grade GPS systems. The speed pass analyser works in that it uses a virtual straight run from your logs and discards the turns as these can give highly inflated speeds.

Best way to do it is to use the Sleipnir system from Linus as it uses two Raspberry Pi as timing gates coupled to a base computer to measure speed over a specified distance.

Of the on-board units available, Powerbox GPS2 is still the best. Futaba's is one of the worst in my experience along with Mikado and EagleTree.

While the PowerBox isn't as good as an official ground-based timing system like we use in speed cups, it's very close.

A few of us have been using it for years now and have anchored the data to speed cup official times at IRCHA and the PowerBox is within +/-5kph of the measured speeds on the timing system.

After you have decided on the GPS system, give my speed analyzer a try. It supports the Futaba as well as the Jeti systems. Out of your GPS data it will calculate the course that you're flying and give you accurate average speeds left-right, right-left and overall, and help you visualize your flying and improve. https://www.helifreak.com/showthread.php?t=770510
I'm done with the dev work of the next version, just need to find time to finish the testing and post it up here.
