Default HK Turnigy 2627-4200 Motor swap

Anyone changed the stock motor out for the turnigy 2627 - 4200kv motor?

Im sick and tired of the vibes given off by the stock motor and the wicked has been out of stock every time ive had the cash :-(

I have a turnigy motor in my hands right now that id like to swap out. Looking at the stocker i think they are what 4600kv? is there going to be much difference performance wise? i was going to use the stock 9t pinion (same size shaft) but wondered if i would be better off going with a 10t (dont have one to hand)?

i can never work out what lower KV motor and higher toothed pinions achieve? anyone care to explain the KV and pinion?

Im running CF blades but for now id be happy running 100% TC with the CF's and getting same HS as with woodies at 70% or a little higher? do you think this is possible achievable before i set off to the shop to grab some solder wire?

FYI i will be running the stock ESC too for now.

Thanks

Dan

Stock is 4500kv, unless you are a stick banging 3D expert I would expect that it will be fine, pretty sure a few have used them but they may have gone up one tooth and be running governed.

Haven't received mine yet. I think you just have to test with a 9 and 10 tooth and see how it feels... I've tried the stocker with a 10T and that didn't work very well, it's too weak for that ratio. It flies OK, but it all in all works better with a 9T on the stocker.

"It's just numbers"

Why don't you test with a 9T first, to get a direct comparison to the stock motor? Then try a 10T. This HK motor should have a little more torque, so a 10T might very well work out well. But then again, it's just numbers and depends on real power, efficiency, balance etc.

My plan is to test this HK motor, plus a Wicked. Want to do back-to-back tests of all three:

stock 9T
HK 9T
HK 10T
Wicked 9T
Wicked 10T

Was planning on 100% flat, no governor to start with. I have an iKON on the way, so may try with governor later... (and self leveling / bailout of course )

Ive come up against a problem....

OK motor looks and feels much better quality than the stocker. Stock pinions fit the shaft just fine so i am going to go ahead and use the 9t and see what happens from there.

However.... Be aware the stock motor screws can not be used as the spacing for the mounting holes for that size screw are wider. Too wide to fit the stock mounting plate (i will measure the mounting hole spacing later this evening when i can lay my hands on my verniers). There are options here, im just off out to find some M2 screws to fit the smaller mouting holes. Im going to sleeve the screws to m3 size in the mount so that its mounts square and doesnt shift with the smaller screws (not necessary but makes life easier). Just make the sleaves the same length as the mounting plate ;-) Ill also make a not of the length screws required.

Ill be sure to post back with my fixes and findings hopefully later this evening.

i was thinking of reaming the slot out a little but thought id go the easy route with smaller screws. Just bought some M2 cap heads and guess what.... either the thread are not cut clean on the motor or the screw holes are imperial

i'll try and cut the threads screwing and backing out the M2 bolts slowly but surely thhis evening... Im guessing its the annodising making the threads real tight as they go in so far and then just tightem right up way before they head for the windings

So much for a quick motor swap lol..... i wont be getting a chance to fly this evening now but i'll be sure to fire it up without main blades in the dinning room before bedtime one way or another :-)

I kinda doubt they're imperial, that'd be extremely rare!

Could be just different step windings.

Use the original motor screws, find a nut to test with. Don't mess up the motor can.

If you need to shorten, enter nut, cut with Dremel, back off nut. That way you get smooth treads at the end.

May the force and so on...

Ok so they are indeed 2mm holes :-) Just needed a little working and all good. I couldnt find suitable material to sleave the 2mm bolts so i ended up just bolting it down as is and made sure my bolts where central in the 3mm slots. Spolled it up without main blades and noticably quiter and smoother.

By the time i had all this sorted and the main blades bolted back up it was dark. I did however have a quick hover test under the street lamp. VERY windy last night i didnt feel comfortable getting it in to IU at all...... Hovering normal mode seemed just fine, spool up was wobble and 99.5% vibe free. I tried spooling up using TH and IU and this thing doesnt seem to have a soft start so it kicked up and had a serious wobble on.... holding my ballz it eventually sorted itself out and held IU (100% TC and TA) without any drama. HS sounds good. Certainly close to stock motor but noticably quieter you can really hear the blades chop which was nice.

I really cant give it a full review until ive atleast had it in IU and try some circuits but its just started snowing here so im not sure when i'll next get a chance but it all looks good cheap fix.... Will purchase a 10t pinion on my next order and see how that goes too. I'll also order a cheap tach and post back with some results. But so far im impressed.

Good!

Yessir - those stock motors are noisy! I got two, one of them has always sounded like it's going to fail any minute...

I actually got my Turnigy motor yesterday! So now I've got all 3 in da house

First thing I noticed is that it's significantly smaller than the Wicked. And it came with pinions - can't those be used? Think there was 2 pinons with it... didn't have the time to count the teeth... didn't you get pinions? Same mesh as the main gear?

Will look more into it during the weekend, and if weather permitting do some testing early next week

Btw just ordered the Lynx frame brace and head dampeners, will be interesting to see!

With the Lynx brace, the Astroid brace and my home made carbon rod stiffeners this frame should be rigid... hope those dampeners are good too, the stock ones seem a bit too soft when using carbon blades.

I think the 2 push fit pinions are 12t and 13t or 13-14 can't remember... Where did you order the dampers?? They are next on my list but I can't find UK stock :-(

I received my trex 450 tail hub and grips today and noticed instantly the lack of slop.... Much better quality I won't be going back to blade that's for sure. So I should now finally have a VERY smooth running heli. A set of decent dampers and ill be a happy chappy.

Ordered directly from Lynx's own webpage.

Yes, those HK pinions were 12T and 13T... so not of use

Just got this:

-so I'll se if I can get some logging done too (RPM would be nice to see)

Mine has a set of both 2mm and 3mm but ONLY the 2mm holes line up and have the correct spacing for the 300x motor mounting plate.

I was wrong... they are 3mm and 2,5mm actually.

Dremeling I decided not to do, would have to shave off too much = no support for the screw heads. So no 3mm.

Found some 2,5mm and made a sleeve, installed and good to go now!

sn00p, DoubleCH posed a good question: What if you use the 3mm screws and mount it diagonally? (one far left, one far right) Did you check?
