Default At what point is it totaled?

So I wrecked my 450 pro one day, doing things I had no business doing, and left it in a box since then. I figured I wrecked it hard enough that I might be able to justify a Mini Protos or simply forgetting the word "450" and moving on. I fly my P500 regularly but I miss having the 450, so I went to the store to add up the repair parts. Note, this is for a 450 Pro.

Depending on how frugal I go, JUST for repairs and no particular "bling" I am looking at maybe 230-260 bucks in parts. For a 450. This is including main grips because I crashed so hard the blade bent the grip in bad enough that the bearings are permanent.

So I guess the question is, do I fix the silly thing (great heli, I admit.), stay the heck away from the 450 and save myself the heartache, or wait a bit and just get a mini protos and throw the Align servos on it with my BeastX.

It is really a difficult decision, and truth be told it may still be a few weeks before I have the cash to do anything, but I have been pondering a while now and figured I would ask.

It's totalled when it costs more to repair than to buy a new one...

I suppose my point was more a question of "at what point is the cost to fix it more of a hassle than tossing the good parts and walking away?"

And insurance companies total at what, about 80%? My first crash was about $150, add another 250 and I am at 400. The kit cost me 410.

This helicopter has been a nightmare, but I gave it a few weeks on a shelf and I am getting far better handling my flying with my larger bird. What really gets me is I replaced more parts on my Protos and still didn't reach 250 bucks I am really liking plastic!

But crashing less would give me more reason to return to the Pro, so I am on the fence about it.

That would be a subjective point

When the price of replacment parts is very close or more then the price of a new kit then I would consider it "totaled". If you crash that hard chances are some electronics are going to be messed up too.

Pretty much everything. Shafts, bearings, the entire tail is actually seized together somehow, I managed to damage a main grip to where I can't safely replace the bearings, blades, servo gears... some parts are looking better, but overall it was a lot of metal bent or seized. Weird.

I would strip all the electrics and sell them on the forums. 4 servo,s, motor, esc & gyro will get you back a couple of hundred, then put that towards buying a brand new kit. Any other parts you can salvage go to your spare parts kit.

What did you crash into ? concrete ? Crashed my 450 a fair number of times and normally had to replace the blades, shafts and maybe a tail boom. $30 - $40. If you are still crashing a lot fly over grass. I have never flown anything bigger than a 450 but I when eventually do get a 500 or 550 I wont be selling my 450.

I consider that its not worth repairing when the cost and effort of repairing it exceeds the value the item will bring me. For example I have a 250 that has about $60 worth of repairs needed but instead I stripped it down and packed it away as I don't really enjoy flying it and I don't learn much with it anymore.

I would buy the mini protos if that is what you have been thinking of doing because even if you fix the pro you will always want the protos. At the moment you are half way there just in the cost of parts to build a second hand heli that is still going to be worth less than what the new parts put on it are worth.

I have a 450 sport that doesn't get much flight time at the moment as i prefer to fly the velocity 50 so i have also been looking at doing a mini protos and using the align servos just for something new and different.

I started on 450's and left for 500's and 250's than got a 600 and revisited the 450's for the sake of something small to fly and cheap(er) to crash.

I say run away from it if you have no reasonable ties to the size. If you can go bigger, do so. If you have another small bird to skoot around with, go bigger. Get a nice 500 or 600.

If you stuck to the 450, ditch yours, salvage what you can. Then go buy a Tarrot kit or something. Despite what people say some of the clone kits are no worse than Align.
