My simple flybarless head arrived today, but I have run into a problem, I can't undo one blade holder screw that screws into the feathering shaft. It wont loosen, even with heat or a quick bang with the hammer. I cannot grip the feathering shaft enough to loosen the bolt. Can someone advise me of any way to solve this without replacing the feathering shaft and thrust bearing.

Wrap the free end with a single layer of thin, non-ferrous, sheet metal (aluminum or brass) and hold that end very tightly in a 3-jaw chuck (drill-chuck if you don't have a lathe) the non-ferrous metal wrap will prevent the jaws of the chuck marring the shaft. Hold the chuck firmly (maybe a vise?) and have at the other end with a decent Allen Wrench. Some heat from a heat-gun may also persuade things.
I have a design on paper for a simple wrench to hold feathering shafts but I just can't find the time to machine it yet and I'm spoilt, as my 3-jaw lathe chuck is always available for just such tasks.

I use an 8mm one-way bearing. The one I got is from a Gaui Hurricane 550, http://www.readyheli.com/204583-20T-...0_p_31819.html. This one works well because it's really easy to hold the one-way because of the teeth.

If you have one grip off, you can remove the head axle from the head block.
You can grip the headaxle right next to the delrin ball and mar it up all you want without ANY ill effects.

I do much like Cletus.. I have some thin brass stock and I wrap it around the shaft a couple times and slap a pair of vice grips on it and wrench away...

I use self-adhesive aluminum tape for HVAC (the heavy stuff, 0.003" thick). I wrap several layers around one end and then bite down with vice-grips or channel locks. Heat is your friend in this case.

Sometimes, I have to put a piece of 400-600 grit sandpaper between the shaft and the brass stock for a little extra bite, but that's usually on the smaller diameter shafts..

This is the aluminum or brass tool, that I have in mind to make one day (too many toys, too little time):

Humm, that's very nice and simple and could be quickly knocked out on our wire EDM from flat plate. Another nice touch would be a set of split collars to adapt it to different feathering shaft diameters.

Need to send some CAD drawings to the Waterjet shop to cut some parts for the factory next month. I may nest a couple of those in the drawings. The split collars are a nice idea BTW

How about extending the split in the RH end & having a series of holes of different diameters? Pick the right one for your head axle, tighten up the bolt on the tool & remove the offending bolt.

Nice Cletus.. Simple and elegant... I'm gonna have to fire up the mill at work tomorrow and make one.

Guys, thanks for your constructive advice, and Cletus, good luck with the tool, I'll be interested in one when they are ready ;-)

The one way bearing tool trick that Vchap told me about a few years back is perfect. i use it to check the dampners without hurting the shaft.
Use Cletus tool to hold the bearing and you have a perfect tool. Lou

No time to finish it with any finesse, as I need it now to work on my Raptor 50. Nevertheless, it’s damned functional!
It fits the Intrepids, and Raptors 50 and 90 (6mm and 8mm) The one-way bearings can be had here: http://www.onewaybearings.com/

You should make a few up and bring 'em to IRCHA and exchange 'em for fuel and beer.
