Default Cx 3X1000 firmware update

I sent an email to K-Y Model asking about a firmware update for the
3X1000 similar to the 3.5 non-s update for the ZYX. Suprisingly I got a quick reply back, and was told that their engineer was currently working on a firmware update and will be available soon.
So that's good news for us guys that were unsuccessful at cross flashing the ZYX software.

sent from my phone using circus midgets

At last!
But do I really need it at my basic level?
Interesting download, includes ZYX drivers?

Nice! Thanks for the news Pete!

Looks like just a few minor tweaks, wonder if they cured the deadband issue? Maybe that's what they are referring to with hover stability.

Well I will update my "Crash Test Dummy" (Blade 400 fbl) and let everyone now how it flies.

Upgrade went smooth and same as ZYX procedure. I usually use John NZ's software so that is what I used and just kept all the previous settings. Went out and test hovered it in front of the house.... well popped up and all was well seemed to fly fine. The only thing I noticed is that it was really getting beat up and drifting by a cross wind more than usual.

I decided to bring it in and use the new CopterX v2.1 program to open up the gyro and reset everything to 3D soft with a few tweaks that I use.... my gain and agility are both at 45 and my tail yaw rate is up to 40, 5 pts. of collective compensation.

But I left the new deadband settings to v.2.1 stock settings which are now: RC Head deadband is 40 and tail deadband RC is now 64. I was previously running 10 on both as per Dr. M's setup tips for pre 3.5 v. ZYX gyros.

Well it seemed to fly a touch better but hard to tell hovering in street with high winds. Piro seemed flat and fine... but I never had any troubles with v. 1 on this issue.

Will try and get it to a field and run it through some better testing when wind settles down.

But so far seems fine.

Ok wind died down some tonight and I went to the field. Iwill do my best to give a fair flight review on cx 3x1000 fw v2.1.

The crash test dummy is a Blade 400 with Tarot FBL head 3d pro cf blades, kbdd tail blades, Hitec HS 65mg cyclic, Hitec HS 5084 on tail, stock EFlite 420 w10 tooth, Align 35 Esc. 3x1000 is stock soft 3d except cyclic gain 45 & agility 45 tail yaw rate up to 40 and 5 points added to cyclic tail compensation.

What I noticed during 3 batteries of sport acrobatic flying

1. Heli is much more fluid in it's movements less jerkiness
2. Heli floats and feels much lighter in air.
3. Cyclic stops are smooth without the previous bouncing.
4. Overall more connected locked in.
5. Hovers both inverted and skids down hold is far better.
6. Tail piro rate more consistent speed did not notice whipping behavior.

So one of the first things I noticed that caught my attention was when flipping or rolling inverted the Heli did not bounce on the stop and was landing on its head flat far more and more constantly. When I did under or overshoot it hung in the air perfect until slight correction was made to bring it flat. Inverted hovers were more locked in with less corrections then ever.

High speed circuits with flips, rolls and big air loops were smooth and well connected. I did not notice any pitching up behavior. Did a few big air rainbows and cyclic and tail held solid on full pitch direction changes.

So with just a short amount of testing my opinion is that this long awaited update is worth the effort. It is a big improvement over version 1. I have one 450 with ZYX v4 and this feels much closer than before, still need more airtime but this was a welcome improvement.

Thanks for the review. How does it compare to ZYX V4? I have a strong suspicion it's actually the same exact firmware.

Default I've been thinking...

The rc deadband issue is well documented.

2 ways to fix this, lower the default(80/40) or change the gyro response to the default by modding firmware. The default values are embedded in the programmer/pc software and have not been changed.

So there must be a change in the response to default values in later firmware.
Using my Jeti profi I'm able to display the rx pulse width.

I set the tail rc deadband to 125 and noted the change in pulse width and moved the stick until the tail servo moved(in normal rate) 1.52 to 1.57=5ms,
Different values gave a linear response 80 =3, 40=2, 20=1(the resolution is only displayed to 2 dp) and 0 gives a buzzing servo as expected so 10-15 works well.

I flashed my cx with v 2.1....and got the same results!
Don't have a tarrot so not able to check against v 4.0(my cx wouldn't x flash)

So is this firmware ZYX 3.5 upwards?

All IMHO etc

regards
Pete

What "deadband issues" are you talking about ? The only issues that I have heard about are the high standard settings that are easily adjusted - have I missed somethng?

The deadband issue,........Courtesy of DR M's excellent notes

Quote:
Deadbands

CX and ZYX firmware older than 3.5 had a bug in the way the stick deadband was implemented ("Deadband RC"). The defaults were far too high and, together with the bug, caused odd, twitchy, or jerky behaviour. A simple solution is to reduce this parameter to a value no higher than 15, or else upgrade the firmware to ZYX 3.5.
Just using it a a method to determine which ZYX software version is the new cx 2.1

Thanks - I have always just dropped them down to about 10 and no issues for me thankfully

So if cx v2.1 was an implementation of zyx v 3.5/4.0 , as Dr M suspects,
I would have expected to see lower pulse widths changes for the cx v2.1.

Unfortunately I do not have a zyx to test this hypothesis!

Pete
