Default eXo 500 ESC

If choosing a Kontronik ESC will at least a Jive 100+ be required or would a Koby 90 be sufficient for moderate 3D?

It depends. On the test model we used a Talon 90 with no issues. I know little about Kontronik, but I believe the original testing with prototypes was done with a Kontronik 100.

Will the new scorpion 6S 120 fit? That would be ideal for those on VBar Control.

That new Chinese 500 posted on the main forum was flown pretty hard with a HobbyWing 80A v4; don't see why this would be any different. I think people tend to go overboard.

An 80A to 100A ESC should be more than enough for eXo. I am using a HW100A V3 on my 550U with no problems... I did have to mount the fan to cool down the ESC when flying during the summer season. When I build my eXo I will probably still go with a HW100A V3... It is light, cheap, fully debugged, easy to program, and has an excellent built-in BEC.

The HW V4 ESCs appear to still have teething issues in combination with certain motors/FBL units despite multiple firmware upgrades.

There is a tail kick on spool up when using an external gov with AFW enabled. The size of the kick seems to be related to the size of the ESC/motor, and spool up is totally fine when using the internal gov - which is a decent one on the v4s.

I'm using the 80A v4 on the Atom 5.5, which weighs in at 2.2kg AU. I fly the stock motor on 516s at 2000 to 2200, and there is nothing that even gets warm. Of course, I'm not slamming it...

Normally I would go with the HW 80W version for the eXo; HOWEVER the HW80A V4 is only 7 grams lighter, at the same time it (HW80A v4) is bigger (wider and longer) than the HW100W V3.

The kicker is the HW100A V3 costs $69 vs $100 for the HW80A V4. Yes the HW80A V4 does have AFW but with the extra overhead when using the HW100A on an eXo I don't think heat will be a problem even when running it at lower rpms. At worse you could use lipos with less cells for low headspeed flying with the HW100A.

Pic of my 550U using two 3S 3300 mah lipos in parallel for up to 7 minutes low headspeed (1400-1500 rpm) flights on the HW100A V3:

All great points. I'll add that I have a HW50A v3 driving a 35A EOX in the Oxy. With all that overhead, I fly it at around 35% all the time and it barely gets warm. So the need for AFW is definitely relative...
The 100A v3 would be a good choice.

Cyclo, is that a Diabolo 550 landing gear on your 550?

I'm using the Chronos cf struts... stronger and lighter than the stock ones.

Ah right, they look almost identical to the Diabolo ones.

Yes and No... I have one in mine, and I had to file/grind off about 10mm off the heat sink fins. Nice thing about it is, it fits very snug, so technically, you won't need velco/zip ties/whatever to keep it in place...

Or, you could just remove the lower spacer, but I have no idea if that would affect frame flex and such...

We're talking about the Tribunus, right? I'd love to see a pic of your mod & mount.

Joe,

As long as you still use the lower canopy mount, removing the lower cross member won't affect frame flex at all in the EXO. Remember, the ESC mount is an external part to the monocoque and frame rigidity depends both on the monocoque and the inner frame halves.

Ask, and ye shall receive...

Pay no attention to the motor wires, I installed the ESC just for the pic... (I fried my programming cable, so swapping a castle 100, I think it's the ice, which also fits, but the lower crossmember needs to come out to install the ESC...)

My Tribunus just arrived yesterday. It looks very beefy. I'm going to give a whirl once I finish another helicopter project I'm starting on tomorrow.

The project for tomorrow is using EXO tail components on a Chronos.
