I'm curious to whether they are as good as Hatori's.

Here's the pics. I also put it next to the OS powerboost pipe for some size comparison. In order to install on my black nitro, a little bit of the fan case has to be trimmed to fit the gold piece on. Also, do I have the rubber things on the pipe installed correctly. I never owned a hatori pipe so I wasn't sure.

Its for sale if anyone wants it. $200 shipped. Send me a PM if you want it. I flew it for 1 minute and didn't like the sound. I prefer my powerboost. Let me know.

That's to bad.. was hoping to hear how it compared tuning and power wise to the Powerboost and Hatori.

Well a few flights on it, and it made a LOT LOT more power for me. 70F ambient so pretty mild out. I will need some gallons before I conclude anything.

OS105, OS7 plug, 22.5%, stock shims.

It's loud and raw sounding. At first I thought the muffler was loose. You can really hear sharp details of the engine. So it doesn't muffle much of the sound.

The engine needed to be run a lot richer vs the Power boost OS pipe. Running rich, it just held headspeed and was riding the pipe really well. But as always I need to fly it under more conditions to see consistency. I think the engine just breaths a LOT better with this pipe vs stock.

It makes a mess too. No exhaust deflector, and running it a lot richer. Bring a towel. :-P

You will probably have a big smile from the power. So long as the sound doesn't bug you. It was impressive pulling better than I have ever experienced in the daytime (cold night sort of power in the day). Doing heavy cyclic loading maneuvers (rolling funnel stuff, piro tic tocs) the motor just held on the pipe and ripped through it. It was fun. :-)

Also backplate was a lot cooler for me than usual. Motor seems a lot happier. The sound made me think I was killing the engine. I'd land and it was cool. So you have to completely readjust your tuning ear here.

But after some gallons I will have a better opinion. I'd like to see it with standard mounting to save 60g. But the additional power so far negates the additional weight gain.

My 2c so far. I'd like to hear other opinions on the pipe so we can collectively agree on what it brings to the nitro scene.

It's a keeper.

The design Massimo designed this pipe for absolute power. But it is possible to trade off sound by increasing length, or other parameters. But so far it _PULLS_.

Putting on a deflector will reduce the sound slightly.

That the backplate is cool is normal with a rich running engine.
So perhaps the sound of the muffler says nothing, maybe tune the engine till the backplate has the same temp as with the power boost. If it's not possible than your power
comes simple because you are pumping NITRO.

Btw, in 2000 I was at the IRCHA and there were some US guys and they made the same looking muffler. they had it in a TSK and also this engine was making a lot more power.
~ 14 month later Curtis came with the MP-2. So the design is not new.
I agree with kartracer, ugly, loud and to expensive on price AND fuel.

My 2 cent,
Frans.

cant please everyone I guess. For me its great to have another choice besides the power boost and even better to have a soft mount option now that hatori is not around

I'm moving pretty slow due to work and weather, but I got the pipe mounted today and hope to fly it on Friday.

The pipe mounts farther forward than the Hatori with the exhaust outlet way forward. I can see why people say it is messy. Also the exhaust outlet OD is much larger than any other pipe I've seen, so no exhaust deflector that I have will fit. There is no slot for a zip tie to hold the deflector anyway. It looks like the rearmost metal cap has been crimped on the inner pipe making mounting a deflector hard if not impossible.

Also the largest diameter of the pipe comes pretty close (1/8 inch) to the painted canopy. Don't know if this will be a problem or not.

I mounted the pipe using the Hatori header since it was already in place. I don't know but maybe using the MRCI header would have spaced the pipe away from the canopy a little more.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that my pipe is half polished and half media blasted which is kind of a weird look.

In comparing the two headers, it looks like the MRCI header will move the pipe out away from the canopy another eight inch or so.

I'm going to switch over to the MRCI header.

EDIT: So now I'm beginning to think this whole thing was a mistake.

Look at the header, the mounting holes are threaded. The OS 105 crankcase is also threaded. Just how the hell is this supposed to work. MRCI included long screws to tighten from the other side but that would mean that I would need to wipe out the threads in the crankcase. I'm not prepared to do that.

I could wipe out the threads in the header but then I would need to mill screw head pockets in the header as well. I can't do that before Friday.

Am I missing something or what? For now I'm going back to the Hatori header to at least test the thing.

I decided to drill the threads out of the MRCI header and use button head instead of socket head screws to gain the clearance needed. So I will be testing with the MRCI header on Friday hopefully.
